Cool pictures, looks like you guys had fun. The event site was cranking today! I saw someone go out on a skim board and a 3 m waroo Smile

Amazingly I only rescued one person on the jetski today, me Rolling Eyes

I went up for a pretty big boost and I either hit my safety release, or I forgot to close the clasp. Anyway, I was in the middle of a gust, about 30 ft up and all of a sudden I am unhooked Shocked So I held on for part of the trip down, but then a 35+ gust hits me and the kite is gone. Thisis the weird part, it pulled the safety off my harness. So the only thing I can think of is that my clip was not securely in place. Luckily I was close to the sandbar and I swam over to my jetski and chased down my kite. The safety leash was still in one peice. Anyway, I guess the moral of the story is always remember to double check your safety set up. Wink

Let me guess... you have a Slingshot safety leash.

Looks like more fun was had than we got.

Oh and I was wondering about the floating kite, glad it went OK.

Nope, I have a best safety leash. Each end has a pretty secure carabiner type clip. I am still not sure how it could have been hooked in to my harness and come off. Question I could understand if the pull of the kite just yanked right through and released the leash safety, but that was all still connected.

yeah, i think best uses the same type as slingshot. I had mine come unclipped many times...until finally, it happened on both ends... i came in completely without a leash.

i never did find a fix for it...but it seemed to be better when I washed it clean (get all the sand out of the clip), and then oil it a little.

Nice pics! I like #17 too! I think #20 could go in the child abuse thread Wink That'll teach those kids to behave!

Looks like a fun day for everyone!

Could you post a picture of the clips?

I've released kites to the safety many times testing my Kiterelease. The style of clip shown below releases a lot. If you look closely at the second picture you can see how the jaws are bent slightly. Once this happens they release almost every time.

The releases were all in wind less than 20 mph and on the damaged clip all to a fifth line safety. In short, not a lot of stress on the clip. Testing the clips with a force gauge I've had failures at less than 100 pounds...

This is a picture of the clip attached to the ring on my harness. The only thing I can think of is that when I took the other end off too attach to my kite, I somehow removed this end also. That doesn't seem realistic though, since I would have noticed it dangling by my feet.

It is also pretty new, so it doesn't have alot of crap inside it and the spring for the opening is pretty strong still.

What can happen with these is a little bit of sand can get in the hinge mechanism. This can hold the gate open when you snap the clip onto the ring. While you're riding the thing can eventually come loose... Anyway, that's all I can think of Jim.

What I'd really like to see is a clip like this with a locking gate. It would be less likely to release unintentionaly, and a lot safer too. There have been a couple of fatalities due to steering lines getting hooked into caribiner type clips. A locking gate would eliminate that risk.
