When designing construction equipment there
is a FOPS (falling object protective structure)
test that is basically dropping a 500# slug from
a crane onto the cab. A grease covered Styrofoam
operator envelop tells if any part of the cab
encroached during the test by leaving grease
on the surfaces. I set up and ran one of those
tests as part of an EU Certification.
That and having been required to read accident
reports as part of my job as construction equipment
design engineer made this point perfectly clear:
Stay well clear of cranes lifting stuff. Being on
that boat while it was being lifted was really
dumb.
