A beautiful, windy afternoon and only one free thinker on the water.

Not sure how I feel about that.

It was easier to stay off the water last week when the weather was cold and rainy, but I was pleasantly surprised to see only one kiter out (briefly) today when it was sunny warm and windy. It's no fun watching others out having fun when you can't be (for whatever reason).
It will be interesting to see what happens as we head towards summer and more warm windy days in April.

I heard that some of the Newport locals chased away a couple of out-of-town kiters today...

Here's a tip for those kiting in apocalyptic times: when you are violating your governor's stay-at-home order to go on a daytrip to a community where there are at most half a dozen local kiters, you stick out like a sore thumb.

PS: even when there's not an apocalypse, you still stick out like a sore thumb.

Stay At Home!

Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

You should stay at home unless you need to go do "essential' things: grocery store, costco, target, home depot, golf, mountain bike, walk, run, dirt bike, sup, kayak, surf or kite. Obviously, the governor was not being too restrictive in what's essential to get through these dark times. Common sense is really the goal. If you watched the youtube video above and see that covid-19 is primarily transmitted from touching your face and avoiding prolonged close exposure to covid-19 carriers, you'd understand that someone day tripping to kite is the least of your worries. The empowered local locos were much higher risk to their community from just their beer run post sesh. Local communities need to worry more about their own residents making runs to costco and target outside their area. While I am absolutely not condoning day trips to the coast to kite, covid-19 is primarily spread within family units, not from a kiter 20 meters away. But the fastest way to lose access to your local beach might be to take things into your own hands. Chill people, we'll get through this. Stay home when you can, keep your distance when you can't and most importantly use great hand hygiene!

PostWed Apr 08, 20 8:33 am    Mask problem solved! Reply with quote

I'm torn because wearing a mask is the right thing to do but I have ER and ICU nurses living with me now and they're hogging all the good masks. I searched for "surgical mask" and "n95" online but everything is sold out, and my sewing skills suck.

They say we should wear a mask to prevent us from touching our faces, so I've started wearing this mask around town which is still in stock on Amazon. It seems to be working, because I've noticed that people (especially children) have no problem keeping their physical distance from me now!

A friend was suited up, walking across the cobbles to the waterline at a little, out-of-the-way central coast surf spot very early this AM when a Knife River foreman chased him down and threatened to have him arrested for his frivolous outing.

Also, the Oregonian posted an article this AM about throngs of entitled folks illegally accessing the waterfall corridor, destroying signs, and generally acting like miscreants...

Good times!

Here's a potential kitemare. I could see it now, 'Doctor (put some hysterical person here) attacks kiter for failing to shelter at home."

I need a clear wonder woman kite that doesn't attract attention.

Location, location, location. There are places to kite but those places are far removed from the city and HR. If you have a boat, I’m sure you can find a kiting spot. Same thing with mtn biking. There are plenty of “unknown” trails.

Mental health is important during this epidemic too! Americans poo-poo mental problems as we used to think those with them were deficient in toughness. Some people need to be in the woods or on the river and they should be able to partake. Problem is most people can’t believe someone might need to do something more than they do. “ it’s not fair”....

Im with NAK. If you really need to do something, do it away from others if you know of places to do it. I’d say health care workers, police, firefighters basically those who have to work to keep the economy going should get a pass.

It will never work but it should be that way.

Go for walks in your neighborhood. If you choose to do something more adventurous, make really sure you don't have a problem where you need to be rescued. May have serious repercussions as you have put your rescuer at risk.

No question that social distancing works and needs to be maintained. What is interesting is how widely social distancing requirements/norms vary by location.

Shelter in Place orders were imposed relatively early where I am in CA, but outdoor activities including biking, walking, surfing and kiting are okay as long as social distancing requirements are maintained. Some parking areas are closed but if your fortunate to live close enough to walk or ride to your favorite spot you have access.

It appears that the local authorities here understand the value of getting outdoors and trust that people will use reasonable care to maintain social distancing requirements. Yes there are always idiots, but they are the exception not the rule and trying to idiot proof any system usually fails anyway.

Hopefully local authorities in Hood River with time will come to a similar conclusion and allow limited access. Why not allow those that live close enough to walk or ride to be able to access trails or launches? Yes that is not fair to everyone, but is it fair to penalize folks you decided to live close to where they play because other did not?

I think it's time to slowly open things up now. Our local Oregon hospital serves over 200,000 peeps. it currently has 35-40 positive covid-19 patients with a few admitted, none in the ICU. The staff are being called off daily with plenty of ppe available. Those numbers are all significantly better from last week. Other hospitals in Oregon are reporting similar results. If it's not time to open things up now, what are we waiting for?

Honestly we are waiting for a coordinated public health response to prevent spread. We need widespread testing, personnel for contact tracing, ability to house quarantined people who don't have living situations that make this possible and adequate stockpile and flow of PPE to protect healthcare workers if/when there is an increase in hospitalizations. The number of cases right now in OR seems manageable if we had all of the above in place. But we don't. Hopefully we get there.
