I'm sure someone on here has done this. Can anyone with experience recommend a reliable autonomous system? Thanks in advance.

Yes, I was impressed with this when I hit Sauvies this summer. If I recall correctly, it even had music coming from it and might of even been solar powered?

This is for my day job. Looking to purchase as close to turn-key as possible. Needs to be autonomous with decent duration and reliable telemetry. There are a lot of options out there - I just figured there must be some first hand experience floating around here. I'll take a look at the replies. Thanks for your input all.

I have a DAVIS Vantage Vue here in Deadhorse. It's been solid through -65 winters and some ridiculous winds. It's a few years old but still going strong.

How about the wind flag? What ever happened to that thing. It was great..
There was a little flag with three strips of three different colors. I think they were actually red, white, and blue. When one strip was flying it was 10knot, 2 strips it was 20knots, and 3 it was 30knots. it was mounted somewhere out in the river on a log or pier or something. It worked like a charm..
It was the perfect gauge to decide which kite size to bring out for long march out to end of the sandbar..

Is that an actual flag or the weighted board setup that pushes back in the wind and has a colored chart or arrow or... that shows wind speed.?
I'm trying to find a picture of one and directions to build it, I see them every once in a while at sites. The last one was at the windsurfer camping area just before the park at Sherman Island.

Weather Hawk makes a portable meter that sinc's with your phone or tablet. They have a wind vane accessory for it or you can buy it as a complete kit...

Are you looking for something more permanent/fixed? Weather Hawk has those types too.
No affiliation, just aware.

The type I'm looking to build is called a Force Deflection Anemometer.
Specifically the style I'd like to build is the type often found at windy locations by the water (windsurfer sites) built from plywood.
I can't even find a picture of one online, but I see it in my head clear as crystal.

Hi Tree... Knowing a bit more about what you are actually trying to accomplish and what you mean by "remote" and "autonomous" would help . Are you interested in wind only or a complete weather station with humidity, pressure, temperature,...?
For example, if you are looking to install a station in a remote location and trying to receive the data miles from it, then you need to look at a system with cellular communication.
If you are looking to get the data within 100m, then small radiotransmitters or simple wires will do the job. The sensor units (wind vanes & anemometers) come in many different shapes, technology and quality. On the high end you will find professional grade ultrasonic sensors and "turbine" style sensors like the one you find in professional weather stations designed to work in extreme conditions (http://www.youngusa.com/products/7/8.html). You have to count for over $1000-$2000 for the sensor only. Add the receiver / transmitter unit with solar panel and display unit and you will be in $3000-$5000 range pretty quickly (and you will need a cell phone provider plan).
The WeatherFlow Weather Station seems incredibly compelling considering that it is using an ultrasonic sensor and is priced at $139 (pre-order). It's probably a great little product for the consumer market. The main limitation I see is the fact that you have to be within WIFI or Bluetooth range. So basically it won't work as a "remote" weather station (unless you can hack a coupling with a cellular transmission unit).
Costco has killer deal (<$70) right now on an AcuRite 5-in-1 weather station.
And then, there is the question of how you want to display the info and for what audience: from small LCD, to App... And as pointed by Stringy, for the happy wind sports junky community interested in "Sharing the stoke and sharing the wind", I designed and developed the WindClock. (www.windclockpro.com)
Feel free to contact me with any questions about it.
You can see the WindClock in action in Hood River during the KB4C 2016 in this video:

The WeatherFlow solution looks awesome but the cheap price does not appear to be available. Its battery powered/wifi as well.
I'm also in the process of building a portable weather station. Just happens I have an Airmar ultrasonic wind sensor together with NMEA/RS252 adapter. I have built RS232 to Wifi and Bluetooth adapters in the past so sensor and wifi/blutooth output together with a pole will be self contained together with a battery and solar panel/charger.
Since I need internet, I plan to put the smarts in an iPhone app which will take the input from Wifi/Bluetooth.
Done this all before so its just a matter of putting all the pieces together.
