i am one the florence regulars (although i am swamped this week and missing the goodness).

here is a thread that has some tips for the ocean (read the whole thread). i learned most of these tips the hard way, better to read them first.

The only way to properly ride waves is:

UNHOOKED

holding your bar in one hand, and waving
your other arm rodeo style to keep your
balance while you smack it.

Watch some surfers. How you gonna flail
you're arms around like that if you're holding
your bar like a chipmunk with a line tied
to your Center of Gravity.

Buy a small C kite, set it up with some short
lines and tiny bar. Get a surfboard with
less tail rocker and lots of nose scoop.
(to get over the white water and so you
don't stick the nose when you're dropping
in steep.)

Learn to loop the kite while holding it in
one hand by letting the bar slide through
so you're pointing it a the kite. Practice
that in a field on a a light wind day. Recover
the loop by transferring the bar to your
other hand or grabbing your loop. Learn
to unspin your bar with out being hooked
in.

Go out underpowered and loop the kite
to get going and to yank you into the
pocket. Unhooked of course. If there's
enough wind that your kite floats down
wind at the same pace as you going down
the line then park it overheard holding
it one hand while you work the wave.
In less wind or if you out run it, loop the
bitch.

If you get worked and your kite goes
down, assume the torpedo position if
the kite is going to get dragged by a
wave. If it gets really bad let the bar
go and then retrieve it with your leash
Only works if you're set up suicide.
Loose the 5th line and never give up
on getting your kite back up.

Oh, and pump the bitch up fricking hard
so it doesn't get all twisted and it will
float on it's back with tips erect. Once
in this position it will ride right over some
big waves. -amazing. If it goes down
leading edge up. (after back stall) grab
front line and hot launch. go for a little
drag (torpedo position) once the kite is
up, pull your knees to your chest to slow
down.

If you kite's all wet, Go to the beach for
a break and yank your bar a few times
to shake the water off your kite. Fuckers
don't fly for shit when wet. Extra weight
causes back stall. AH shit, choke the
chicken or grab some front line. No fun
to dump your kite again so soon.

Talk to yourself, the kite, your board,
the wind and the waves while you
are riding. It helps and I think they
sometimes listen.

If it's too gnarly to do all this, Grab your
twinnie and boost or go find some
flatwater for wakestyle.

Psycho Texas Kiter Trash, That's what I am Laughing

Too damn windy in Florence for proper wave
riding unless you're riding a what-cha-ma-callit

Just kidding. I'm just a puss.

My daughter is in C-town (studying to become
engineer like her old man) so I might be at
Newport some. I heard they're having trouble
with giant squids there Shocked

And if I don't sell my Moho I might be doing a
coast crawl.

Here's another little tip.

If you stuff your kite,
keep riding your board
to keep lines tight and
put you in position for
relaunch.. Don't continue
down the line and ride
into your lines. Dumbass!
(that's me talking to myself)

East wind @10-20 today but
SSE at 20-30 tommorrow.

Sorry to hijack your thread.
It's moho madness.
