If the readers here take nothing else from this discussion, please just pay attention to this. The first 30 seconds I was on my North Pacific local glass board... the lights went on clearly. THIS is what the joy of a directional is all about. After 9 years on various beer-cooler foam core boards I've found Nivana.

Custom boards are AWESOME but expensive......
I've also seen the communication between shaper and customer break down and the customer gets something less than he was hoping for. It's happened to me a few times and I was disappointed with the end product.
Production boards are often available for half the price of custom.
Used production boards in good shape are cheap and obtainable for most kiters.
You demo a production board and you know what you'll be purchasing. |

+2 for Doyle Customs. Aside from being the most versatile board I've ever ridden I instantly had people commenting how much my riding had improved. I had to laugh because any "improvement" was absolutely 100% Doyle related. Everything became in-sync faster, smoother and more in control so confidence goes through the roof. Long free rides are now expected, not the exception, so you come away with those "whoa, that was different...and fun as #$%&" kind of feelings.
For me, and most of the people I ride with, time on the water in today's hectic world is harder to score so IMO it's money very well spent for riders feeling capped/tapped on their progression to get the most out of their time. Yes, you do have to pay to play when inhaling the fun factor in larger quantities but we're talking about a couple hundred dollars....not thousands. Easy to manage.
For newbies.....I concur with LDHR's position that as they better understand the connection and balance between their feet/harness/hands they'll naturally gravitate from a mass production board to a custom. Circle of life boys. Get it. |

Patrick and Matt are elite , it's always kewl to see them rip! They could ride a piece of plywood and do circles around me. It's nice to see their sponsors keeping them on boards instead, cause they make other kiters dream!! And who knows, maybe a production board will be your "magic stick".
I do understand that sometimes there is a negative experience with a custom board builder. Like any relationship, it requires effort, faith and communication; and unfortunately sometimes you have to just look for another one. Keep trying, Research and Development apply to your shaper...
As for the cost; it's a helluva lot of work, that requires a good deal of experience, and in my mind, a lot of soul. That's what sets a custom board apart; makes it something special, gives it the intangibles; it's the soul!! Find a shaper who is meticulous about details, one that is passionate about each board that is created, one that pours his heart into every blank....when you find that, you're on your way to forging a relationship, and understanding what a custom board is all about...
If you live in the Gorge, then you are fortunate to have several shapers right there building custom boards, check 'em out. Happy kiting, and whatever you ride, if you think it makes you ride better, then it probably does!! |

FYI Matt reads this forum so maybe he'll chime in.
While I think all the top guys would be better on customs I think it's mostly simply because they would be less glassed lighter weight boards. The down side is they would break 2 of them a day.
The only top strapless rider I know of that rides customs is Sivan Oz ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLFtgcNGTJ8 ) but he got knocked out by Matt in the 2016 Tarifa Strapless Pro. |
