I had a very similar situation on holiday in turks and caicos. Every time the kite looped I got dragged under water. After 5 or 6 times going under I knew my only hope was to let everything go. I didn't even consider my knife because I have never been in a situation that called for it. Luckily I pulled the the right release and was able to swim to a boat anchored close by. If that boat wasn't there I'm not sure I would have had the energy to swim to safety. I learned many things:
1. Know your safety releases inside out. Releasing the chicken loop was basic. But when that did nothing knowing what to do next is critical. The shock of something not doing what you expect it to can waste precious seconds and cause you to not think clearly about your next move.
2. Always dress for the worst case scenario. I didn't have my life jacket with me because I was trying to save room in my luggage. Again if that boat wasn't there I don't think I would be writing this post today. Don't get complacent. It doesn't matter if you are riding your local spot for the 100th time, or riding in a lagoon where you can stand up 'anywhere', you never know what could happen in this sport and especially foiling. I will only ride with full safety gear including a whistle.
3. If at all possible don't ride alone. I'm not sure if another rider could have done much in that situation, but at the very least they can go for help.

It's been a few months since my episode and I have yet to get back on the foil. I think I will need a few good sessions on my surf board before I get back on the foil. I am now the 'safety officer' at our local spot.
