Greg,
Downwinders are a bit risky this time of year due to cold water and strong current in the river.
There's always a risk element for downwinders on the river - wind speeds vary along the river and there's a lot of places that are not friendly for self rescue or hiking back up to the road.
For these reasons most people avoid downwinders in spring. They're more common in summer. The summer thermals are more consistent and the warm water is less risk in case of self rescue.
This time of year most people stick to the popular launches and stay close.
On the flip side - the strong current makes it easy to kite upwind. Try launching at the Event Site and kite up to the Hatchery above Wells Island. You'll have a fun downwinder coming back. |
