Here is a link to some photos from my recent trip to Vietnam:

http://homepage.mac.com/angstrom1/PhotoAlbum36.html

The trip was organized by Kinsley Wong of Xtremebigair.com. Three weeks of kiting, touring, and just having a great time. The weather was pretty good other than the typhoon. The typhoon did bring some good wave action. The photos with the brown water were taken the day after the storm. Usual kite size was 9M.

This was the warmest water that I've ever kited in. Mid 80s. Food was real cheap and tasty (other than the bulute duck eggs). Most meals with drinks below $4. The price for lodging on the beach was $25/day. A cheap place on the beach will run about $10.

I spent a total of two days in Saigon, four in DaNang, and twelve in Mui Ne. I think I will head back next year for a month....or two.

Kurt,
Nice shots. I'm headed there end of Feb. I was there last year in late 2005. Very fun place to kite. Cute puppy pics too...

I think the total travel time to get to Saigon was about 24 hours. Getting there is a bitch. So, stay for a long time. I used frequent flyer miles to get there. Once I got there my total cost for the three weeks was about $1000.

The wind is strong from Dec-March. It kicks in around 10-11 and starts to get gusty around 4. Shuts off completely after sunset. Phan Thiet is the closest city to get a forecast. Mui Ne is actually a few MPH higher wind than Phan Thiet. Here is a Weather Underground link. Looks windy this week.

Kurt, looks like an amazing trip. What was your flight itinerary like time and cost?

This might be a weird question, but was it hard to find "normal" food if one didn't want to eat whole eggs or drink snake wine? Wink Thanks so much for sharing your adventure!

Let me see if I can answer all of your questions.

About the jelly fish:
We did see a few at the beginning of the trip. None towards the end. So, if you go soon you might not get very many. Two of the guys did get minor stings. For treatment you:
1) Do not rinse with fresh water. This makes it worse.
2) Pour vinegar over sting area.
3) Shave the area. I guess the jelly fish has tiny little barbs that hook into your flesh. Shaving removes these barbs.
4) Make a sugar and water paste and put over the sting area.
You may want to contact Trang at Windchimes to see how bad the jellyfish will be for the time of year that you are going.

About the food:
It was great!!! Much like Thai food. The snake wine and duck eggs were just weird things that I took photos of. Most places serve fish, chicken, beef, shrimp, and squid.

Cost to get there:
I used frequent flyer miles. I think to buy a ticket would cost about $1200. The route that I took was PDX-SFO-Hong Kong- Saigon.

The pups:
Not for sale. I hear that they are doing well. If you stay at Soui Tien you can check on them for me and send some photos.

I hope this info helps. I'm going to be at the Kiteboarding party this Saturday. Feel free to ask more questions about my trip.

Looks like your Aggression board helped you have an awesome time!
Vietnam completely rocks! If any of you have concerns, think top notch resort row and just about the freshest seafood you could imagine....

Jessie,
I'll have to agree with you on Mui Ne...It rocks. I was there in late 05 and decided I must come back so I go back in FEB.

Looking forward to some more downwinders and rides back on the motor scooters!

I'm heading to mui ne to kite for the first time for the month of jan '09. I'm trying to decide if it's better to just get there and find a good cheap place to stay on the beach, or if booking ahead (for a potentially busy time) is the ticket.

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a cheap spot on the beach that's in the kiter hotspot. and if you know contact info, even better. thanks!
