There aren't many times that jones has issues with people, traffic, trainers, etc. Couple of things that would be cool for us all to do though.
1. Leave the western most part of the beach to the FNG's and folks getting lessons. Before Nate started giving lessons at that part of the beach, everyone formed up a lot closer to the paved area. Its common etiquette for FNG's to start further upwind of everyone, but we all eff that up by starting up there as well.
2. Bring more chicks in bikini tops to watch how cool we all are
3. Share whats in your cooler.
4. Give kerpella a land
Kerpella, its unfortunately common in kiting for people to look past you when they dont know you. For you, Id simply advise chatting a few people up, saying you're an FNG, and ask for the lay of the land and how people do things. Also, if you have a problem on the beach, like not getting a land, ask some people WTF. I think the reason you are getting some 'tough love' right now is because you are new and because you didn't ask some people what you have to do differently while on the beach.
If forecast is good, Ill be there on weds with cooler full and chick in a bikini

Being someone that frequents Jones often I felt I would chime in here. I have been going there for 3 years and have always been offered landings and got launched when I asked. I in turn do the same and offer advice for anyone that is asking. In fact I often get propositioned for an unsolicited landings by dirty landing hookers when I come in to change boards out. I usually just shake my head and say no thanks just changing boards.
Now I cannot comment on what happened that day as I was not there however I will comment on what I see as the original poster miss-representing her kiting skills in what appears to be an attempt to prove what she has to say is valid.
Going to the cost this weekend? Really? You just finished a jetski assisted lesson/session yesterday in the mellowest of wind and flattest of water. You are not yet competent enough to be out solo on the river let alone in the ocean. I am not knocking your progress I am just stating your skill level at your last session. So you might be misleading people with your claim that you are skilled enough for a coast session.
You really do not have enough experience or time on the water to be ranting about a one-time occurrence at jones. “Careless Kooks”, you are far far from being out the kook classification; in fact you haven’t been on the water enough to show your full kook potential. I will not say you are a careless kook as I have not watched you much, however not being able to ride up wind, self launch/land or really be able to skillfully maneuver puts you smack in the middle of kook land. Heck I don’t even consider you a “kiter” yet, rather still in the lessons/learning stage. Those in glass houses shouldn’t……. well you know the rest.
I don’t mean to be rude or an asshole but you really need to check your ego or whatever it is you have that prompted you to post about this “incident”. You have lots and lots of learning to do before you start criticizing other people let along ranting.
Oh and welcome to NWkite…awesome first post I hope the next post is better.

I haven't been to Jones in a couple of years but if I remember right if someone is in your way there is a ton of beach to go up/down wind of them. As you progress you'll be surprised by what situation you can kite around. I still would rather skip the busy event site days just because it's amazing how people can weave around each other, something I'm not a fan of doing.
Even if you can't self land you should be able to put your kite at the edge of the wind window and just let it be until someone can grab it. Some times people truly just don't see.
And thanks for the forum drama everyone, I haven't experienced that since I last ventured onto a parenting forum.

Nice slam dude and welcoming her to the forum.
Land kiters. . . yet another user group wanting and competing with kiteboarders for access to the shoreline. Perhaps smackdown '14 they can be incorporated?
Kerpella: JohnB made a great point about trainer kiters being clueless to kiteboarders shoreline access needs as those people are often the newest of the new and have yet to be instructed by kiteboarders as to the needs and wants of newbie kiteboarders learning. Often times these people are "wind orphans" or "wind windows" who have been left on the beach to watch kiters on the water and dream and screw around with a trainer kite with little to no instruction.
This is why I asked if you went up to them to explain how their presence on the shoreline was impeding your newbie kite session.

This is not the response I recommend. Go ahead get a scratch or two in your new kite, know everything about how to handle it while alone. Then when people don't land you, you can just go land yourself with confidence.
You do not want a mental block of getting your new kite dirty when you have less than a second to make a decision. Jones is a sketchy launch for wind shadows and people. Go to the coast and find a place on the beach up Sunset and work on it even if you don't think you need to. Always practice those basic skills when you get a new kite model or different size than you're used to.
This is what happened to ponddog's truck at Jones a few weeks back from a guy who learned how to launch his body into a full sized pickup not knowing how to keep his kite safely flying down by the water. He is lucky to be alive to understate it.
Practice and then practice again. Repeat. Advise is like assholes so sorry, but in most places that aren't like the gorge there will not be someone who knows how to land or launch you, or there won't be anyone there at all.

Since it has been brought up I will throw in my 2 cents:
Jones is big, there is no need to ride clear up to shore in the teaching area Seriously!! You have people taking off, coming in, and teaching in the shallow area cove so why do people think its okay and SAFE to ride clear up to shore dodging kites?!?!? When you get within a 100ft turn around and go back out!
Tons of beach upwind and downwind, USE IT!! stop hovering in the cove. I can't count how many times people have nearly tomahawked me or literally RAN OVER ME trying to get those last few feet. Screw that
If Jones is crowded try body dragging out with your board and then take off.
Before I started teaching in that cove, everyone rode from the parking lot. Maybe its time people start using more the middle of the beach and less of the west end where accidents are most likely to happen with the number of beginners in that area. The cove is not the only area to take off from, you have 3/4 OF A MILE OF WIDE OPEN BEACH TO PICK FROM. Try launching and taking off further down and make it a safer place for everyone.
Food for thought....................

Hey guys! I appreciate everyone's comments and support! OG, you're hilarious. Hope to see you out there even though I'm apparently not a kiter yet and I'm being discouraged from trying to learn what people have to suggest. For the record, never said I wasn't a kook, actually, I was referring to myself as one, but I'll be sure to make a mental note of how people think that came from an ego I was unaware of having. Not trying to come off as a jerk guys! I'm just thankful for the group of friends I have out on the water that are supportive of one another, getting started and otherwise that are amazing and all the people on this forum with great, positive feedback! Wasn't looking to offend or hurt anyone, rather make a simple suggestion how possibly we could keep everyone safe. Guess I'm not competent enough though in my observations with trying to prevent accidents so, I'm just going to gracefully bow out and let whatever happens, happen!
See around in other posts!

Kerpella,
Personally I enjoyed your post. I understand why you were slammed a bit however I think your post had merit. We all need to stay safe within our own personal skill level. You ended up in a position that was outside your comfort zone, and this forum is an excellent tool to gain advice regarding how/where to improve your skills such that you overcome these limitations.
LDHR provided excellent advice. Learn how to self land.
Upon learning to self land a kite you will have graduated to a new world of independence making you a much safer kiter as you will always have backup options.
There are multiple methods for self landing, however I will mention one that is worth practicing at Jones Beach or the Coast.
Disclaimers!!!
* You should probably hire an instructor to show you how to do this....
** Make sure you have plenty of room downwind with no obstructions to run into, or catch lines on. This method should only be performed where you have plenty of open sand.
*** This method can only be performed in conditions where your kite would normally sit on the beach without anything to hold it down. i.e. This is not a high wind technique
**** This method may not work on all kites. It requires that you are able to independently pull the front line leading directly to the leading edge of your kite.
Okay.... Now for the technique:
1) Bring your kite down with reasonable speed in the same method you would use if you
were landing to a person. You do not have to force the kite straight down, however
you do want your kite to be coming down in a continuous motion towards the ground.
2) As your kite tip reaches the sand you will be performing two simultaneous actions:
2a) You will pull the opposite front line of the direction you are landing. For example
if you are landing your kite to the right, you will pull the front (aka inside or leading edge) line
that connects to the left side of your kite's leading edge.
2b) Simultaneously you will walk (jog) about 7-10 feet towards your kite. It is
very important to be aware of the slack lines this action will create such that you
do not get caught up in them. You will find that you actually need to take your
first couple of steps at an angle upwind so that you stay out of your lines.
3) At this point your kite should simply fall and turn perpendicular to the wind just as if
you had laid it out on the beach.
4) Confirm your kite is stable on the ground, and at this point you can simply walk up
up your front line you pulled (which should be the only line with tension) up to your
kite
My recommendation is to practice steps 1-3 at the beach over and over until you are confident you can self land on your own.

Ha-ha! I started going to the cove cuz that's where others were and I thought "safety in numbers". I also can be a bit anti-social so I was trying to turn over a new leaf. I also loved the little yorkie named Bomont who was always running crazy and having a ton of dog fun. I didn't like the change anyways so now I feel like I can go back to the far end and be anti social again! Who says things don't ever work out!

Maybe everyone should just stop going to jones like it used to be. Have not been there this year to see what everyone is whining about. This seems to be an issue at every spot as it becomes more popular. That place is huge. Why the hell is everyone on top of each other. Cut the cord and take the tatas out if your mouth and venture around. Go way up wind, down wind or to nuclear alley. No reason at a to crowd everyone !!
