Fri Apr 18, 14 10:02 am Your 2014 guide to rivernose |
|
|
Hopefully you all can help me with they following hypothysis:
Rivernose is caused by pollen allergies and can be measured by comparing "rivernose" congestion to what is blooming.
Last year I started kiting in May and remember that my first few nights of sleeping were impossible due to rivernose. I began crosschecking my rivernose with a pollen bloom chart. I began to see a correlation.
This year I have already had my nose forced full of water on a couple crashes (all during the first week of April) and have yet to have a rivernose experience.
My hope is that the readers of this topic share their rivernose experience cross referenced with the pollen count and what is blooming.
Real example of pollen: 4/18/14 Today Ash, Alder, and Birch are blooming and are considered to be medium-high to high over the next couple days.
Not real example of rivernose experience: Crashed only two times yesterday but my sinuses were completely closed all night. It woke me up on several occasions and finally subsided about 10am.
A couple resources:
http://www.pollen.com/allergy-weather-forecast.asp
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayPollen.asp?Zipcode=98605&MR=1
So please share your experiences and lets see if my hypothesis holds up.

Part of the river goes through Kamloops, B.C. and they have dead cows floating down the river from time to time. Also in Canada, a sewer leak was just patched way up river and has been leaking thousands of gallons of poo for years into the upper Columbia. There is a large pipe dumping run-off into the river by the Discovery Center in The Dalles. There is new advisory saying to not eat any resident fish in the river.
I'm sure it is pollen though.

I also have noticed that my river nose is non-existent this season. Last season it was instantaneous itching/sneezing on water impact in the spring. I am not dweeby enough to have ever been allergic to anything..

I have grass allergies (ragweed etc.) and they peak in May. Last year was my first full year of kiting and I had some miserable nights in May so started wearing kayak nose plugs which solved it. Mid June I stopped using them and had no more river nose. Ive ridden 6 times this year without plugs and no problem. I expect to need them in May though. I bought mine at the Kayak Shed? at 1st and Oak.

Macguber, that is exactly the kind of feedback that I'm looking for fellow kiters to post. Last May was AWEFUL for me to. I haven't been out in over a week, but I will post on this topic after I ride and get my first bout of Rivernose
4/21 What is Blooming:
Hood River area: Ash, Alder, Birch - medium-high
Yakima area: Mulberry, Sycamore, Ash - high (upstream a couple days)

What's blooming in the Hood? Oak, Walnut, and "Grasses"
What's blooming upstream? More of the same.
I've been out every chance I could take lately. Last week and Monday I had crashes and comparable nasal douches of Columbia river water. The only difference... Monday night my nose finally siezed up. Went out again yesterday. Only crashed lightly a couple times...some nose problem.
Anybody else feel like it's suddenly "Rivernose Season?"

memorial day the 26th got rivernose a little bit in hoodriver in a 2 hour session with lots of dunks. Then the same day I went out for another one hour session just down river of sauvies island for an hour and the water burned my nose each dunk. It took 36 hours before I could breath through my nose.

Thanks Pepi for the feedback.
Yesterday's dunks didn't give me the same reaction that I had earlier in the week.
What's blooming today? The same crap that's been blooming all week. And Sunday it looks like it's going to increase.
