I was thinking Seaside is a possibility, but high tide is in the morning this weekend. Saturday morning is looking a bit too wild for my tastes, but Sunday is maybe looking ok.

The question I have is with respect to wind direction at Seaside. I'm thinking that Tillamook Head might cause some nastiness if there's too much south in it - either blocking the wind or causing lots of turbulence/gustiness. As the wind becomes more westerly, I'd expect it to become cleaner. But I don't know how much west would be needed.

This seems to be born out from the few times I've tried kiting at Seaside, and the winds have either been light or really gusty in comparison to the Clatsop Spit readings.

Do you folks with more Seaside experience think there's anything to this idea?

For Southerlies Downwinders are the call, Del Rey to Sunset, if the forecast holds I'll be there on Sunday.

I'm planning on Siletz Sunday ... but if the forecast get too much higher it'll suck. Siletz gets bad gusty on 25+ southerlies.

The tide could kill the whole session, but it's over the entire day, so hopefully it'll be slow and doable on a surfboard.

Saturday might be a good day to watch football

Friday Night: S wind 30 to 40 kt ... becoming 35 to 40 kt after
midnight. gusts to 50 kt. combined seas 18 ft dominant period
15 seconds. rain.
Saturday: SW wind 35 to 45 kt ... becoming 35 to 40 kt in the
afternoon. gusts to 50 kt. combined seas 27 ft. showers and
isolated thunderstorms.
Saturday Night: W wind 35 to 40 kt with gusts to 45 kt ... easing

High tide looks around 8:30am so don't get sucked out to sea on the ebb - also watch for flooding hwy 101 south of seaside - lots of water moving around, killer riptides, trees in the surf, lions, tigers & bears

I'm pretty interested in how the flood mitigation project they did this summer will look after 3" of rain. We haven't had a storm yet to produce the usual flooding situation. They essentially removed the old dike that lined the entire west side of the Necanicum which held the water to the river side and highway. Now the water should drain back towards the headland into the fields. We'll see. I hate the tigers, they're mean and the gooey ducks have arsenic.

I've never kited when the surf is as big as forecast for Sunday. Is there generally much room on the inside for mere mortals? I've been out when the swell was something like 10 feet, and that wasn't a problem. Not sure what it's like if it's double that...

Here's NOAA's forecast as of 3pm today:

Sun: SW wind 20 to 25 kt with gusts to 30 kt. Wind waves 6 ft. W swell 23 ft at 16 seconds...subsiding to 18 ft at 15 seconds in the afternoon. Rain likely.

Would Lot D work in a SW? I have done it in a straight South and it was fine. I would have to get there bright and early with the tide I know but, a 23 ft swell is way out of my range.

I would say no, since the wind is coming over the land/trees, the gorge would be a better bet

and some caution to the oceanside chargers - 20ft+ swell does come with unpredictable surges on the inside and crazy strong rip currents if you drop your kite (not for everyone)

in this shot the swell was only 15ft and a surge lifted the ski off the dolly and over my head

Thanks for the heads up, that would have been a long drive to get crappy wind. I'll stick with a South forecast.

Water temp is 40 at Bonneville. Brrrrr.....

I have kited lot D on a SW. Its fine. The upwind rock jetty creates a nice glass off for some butter riding.

just beware of the land down wind of you and incoming unstable air Shocked
