That's not fair or accurate. Yes, some of the surf spots are locals only, but that holds true anywhere. California is a lot worse than Hawaii in that regard. There is some intimidation if you try and move in to a locals only neighborhood, but that is the only way they can actually keep a part of their island to live on. After the missionaries stole all of the locals land, there was little to no land left that could be privately held. The federal government and the missionary's descendants hold almost all of the land in Hawaii. The bastard missionaries won't even sell the land unless they're strapped for cash. Instead, they lease it. Most people don't own the land their house sits on... This, along with the finite amount of land available, has created a situation where locals would be forced off the islands if they didn't keep prices lower in certain areas. Oh, and BTW, the next time you're in Hawaii and your kite goes flat from a tiny thorn puncturing a bladder, kneel down and thank the missionaries. They brought in the thorn trees specifically to discourage walking barefoot. Big sin that, walking barefoot.
Theft? Sure it's around. You know what though, as common as it is, it's not near as common as in other areas with a similar economic conditions. Try parking your car in any Mall parking lot in the Portland area with valuables showing. Odds are better for a break in than they are in Hawaii. I'm not defending theft; thieves suck. But don't put down a whole group of people for the actions of a few. BTW, violent crime is exceedingly rare. There's not a place on Oahu or Maui that I'd be in fear for my life walking around at 3:00 am. You can't say that about Portland.
By far the vast majority of native Hawaiians are very cool to everybody, including tourists. There is prejudice in the legal system in Hawaii. It's obvious and completely condoned. That's not the fault of the locals on the beach though, so don't put that on them. Treat the locals with respect, and odds are the best anywhere I've ever been that they'll treat you with respect right back. Start flipping them shit, and they might pound your ass to teach you a little respect. I have no sympathy for some smart ass that learns a lesson his parents should have taught him.

The two times we have been their locals have been so wonderful and welcoming to us. And in the two years I've been reading this forum I can't think of one topic bashing Maui locals.

Fuck any locals only attitude anywhere, and past poor behavior does not legitimize current poor behavior. Just like unions can become as bad as the rich business owners they were created to fight, people can become just as bad as the people that mistreated them. You gotta rise up and do it righteously or you are just as bad as those you rise against. I never heard of Ghandi fighting anyone. I am sure their are lots of nice people in Hawaii, but it sounds like their are plenty of bullies as well just like everywhere else in this world.

just got back from Maui........
sounds to me like the kiteboarder(s) were in the wrong.
there's no excuse ever for launching and landing inside that pool (especially if there are non-kiters in the pool).
there's a half mile of beach from old mans down to the sewage treatment plant to launch and land - why would any kiter be so rude and not let the non-kiters have a very small portion to swim and fish?
also sounds like the kiters were visitors and not aware of the rules and etiquette regarding that spot. i've also seen some of the videos and the kiters looked like kooks and should have been launching somewhere else more appropriate (naish or old mans).
and yeah - the guy filing the complaint is also being stubborn.
not being a local i wouldn't presume to tell them how to manage their beach..... but i don't see how it would hurt the kite community to ban launching, landing, and riding in and around that pool (say a 50 yard buffer).
and yeah - i did sign the petition.

Well, not launching, but landing in there is nice when there's a lot of east in it and your kite falls out of the sky as soon as you round the rocks just downwind. I agree I wouldn't do it if there we're swimmers in there.
I think this was triggered in July. The wind can be really shadowy at this launch. Once you get your kite up you head out immediately and try to get to the wind line. This guy wrongly stays in the launch area screwing around with families nearby. Like we keep saying, it only takes one jackass.

OK, I read elsewhere that the guy IS trying to shut down the whole strip, not just KA'A.
I can't see business stakeholders on Maui letting it happen but we should get as many signatures as we can to send a message.

And the sign might say "wind junky people cannot fly their kites"
So I accessed that website and signed that electronic petition to protect my beach access and kite flying rights
That bald-headed haloe said this rocky area looks like fine beach access for swimming and he’ll think it will do
So swimmers only can go swimming in hundreds gallons of diluted processed pooh.
Signs Signs
Everywhere there’s a sign
F*cking up the scenery
Costing me precious water time
Kite here, don't kite there
Can't you read the sign

latest feedback is they are going to enforce existing laws... Not really sure what we can do now.
Mr Ed Underwood from DLNR-DOBOR just confirmed that they are moving forward and preparing to install three sets of buoys at Kanaha Beach. These buoys will designate the expanded zones that will exclude all vessels and watercraft. This includes; kites, canoes, windsurfers, surfers, SUP etc. The expanded zone includes about three thousand five hundred (3500) feet of shoreline that will become an exclusive swim zone. This represents an huge increase over the currently used areas. Now any vessel or craft that attempts to enter or cross these expanded zones will be subject to increased enforcement which includes; fines and possible confiscation of equipment.
Mr Underwood also confirmed that this enforcement action is in direct response to the confrontations between the kiteboarder and the swimmers at Ka'a point.
He also stated that there are currently no plans to update or amend the old rules, that are about to be enforced.
The DLNR-DOBOR confirmed that they have already built the marker buoys and anchor systems, and plan to install them very soon.
We anticipate that once these buoys are installed and the old zones are enforced, that it will become an extremely difficult task trying to reverse this process at a later time.
Please don't let this catastrophic loss of access occur, everyone will be affected because all of the current users will be forced to crowd into a reduced area that is far smaller than the currently accesible area. This will create a domino effect of overlapping user groups that will be forced to move into each others areas.
Every concerned person should take immediate action to contact the authorities and try to persuede them to defer the installment of these buoys until a reasonable and updated management plan can be reached.

If you draw a 3500 ft line and put the pond in the middle of the line - this is what you get. That only leaves a couple narrow windows to launch.

This melodramatic idiot thinks kitebeach should be his private beach and in fact this beach is probably the worst beach for swimmers and infested with bacteria from the runoff and water treatment down wind. There is actually a better pond for his kids to swim just east where the scenary is much more beautiful. But no, he decides to be a gonad about it and wants to battle.
Here is his email philipbolek@hotmail.com and he often goes by the name of Konamax as his alias on the Maui news forums. He rents a place in a crappy part of Wailuku.
You can send him a personal message.
