Hey, we're always just looking at the danger to us, the kiter... how about looking at it from a board's point of view!

Huh? Leashes are nuts. And I only ask Jack for no more that 2 ice cubes, 3 fingers. Reminds me, stop by in Las Vegas for 1.75 ltrs for $29!!! Less than the cost of .75 in Wa State.

That shot is perfect! We just need to photoshop a bullseye on the back of that guys head to further illustrate the point.

Fly the kite right and you dont need a leash.

I have seen a couple nasty head wounds on the beach from people using leashes. One dude even was wearing a helmet it just hit him right above his eyebrow in the little gap.

So true Dangler. Even with a helmet, one can sustain a nasty recoil hit from the board and still be compromised. Ditch the leash.

there is a small but dedicated contingent of surfers who don't believe in leashes either. Makes you a better surfer if you have to be conscious of board control through the kickout. Just say'n.

You rode with a kiteboard leash for 2 years and then you gave up the sport? You also didn't learn to body drag in 2 years?

Please don't use a kiteboard leash, and learn how to body drag. It will at least save you the money on your leash and it will teach you an essential skill you need to be a proficient kiteboarder. I'm so thankful I feel comfortable body dragging because it comes in handy all the time!

I'm sure it's been posted before and I know this topic is about as "fresh" as the dog poo one but here's a website dedicated to leash injuries. http://www.kiteboardleash.com/index.php?page=testimonials

Ultimately, it's your choice.

yes, i just watched a documentary that brought up the history of the surf leash. As the full story goes the first leash was invented by O'neils son. He attached surgical tubing to the nose of the board and the riders wrist. After his father was injured using this configuration the leash attachment point was moved to the back of the board and the riders ankle.

We have had this ongoing debate for years - but those of you that are ardent NWKite commentators -are you really speaking about static leashes (surf style leashes)?

I doubt any of you have actually used a coil/reel style leash. These style leashes are completely different animals. Except for the one fellow that who had a situation where the coil/reel malfunctioned due to twist/wrap, had anyone been injured when using a coil/reel?

The commentary gets confusing because we don't know if you all are referring to static or coil/reel leashes.

Perhaps the photo by kitezilla answers the question. When pulled off with such force it seems obvious that the board is going to come back at you - coil/reel or not...

-A.K.

The above link to the most exhaustive discussion of leashes ever.

The subject is not as cut and dry as some may think... but the advice of "Don't use a leash of any kind!!... is still the best advice to give to most people. Only after a kiter is well educated on the subject, should that person consider the use of a particular type of leash for a particuar situation.
