PostMon Sep 09, 13 7:07 am    Heading to Gorge/Coast...where to go for wind? Reply with quote

Hi guys- I'm new here. My buddy and I are driving out from Montana on Wednesday and plan to stay through Sunday kiting. We are most likely coming through the Gorge on our way out. Any recommendations as to good spots (we are intermediates) where it will likely blow would be awesome. I've noticed that the models for the coast show it really backing off after Wednesday. Thanks in advance,

J

you'll probably bounce between rooster rock/stevenson(tough launch if not confident)/ and hood river.

If you're lucky the coast will get a north wind bump on Friday or Saturday. Too early to tell. Hopefully you'll score in the gorge wednesday thursday and things line up for some saltiness come the weekend. Pretty friendly out in the ocean these days.
Have fun Thumb's Up

Hi All,

I'm back home in the northwest for the next week. Forecasts are looking bleak. I'm going to hit the south coast tomorrow but after that I'm at a loss....

Will anywhere be good with this heat bubble?

Pistol/gb is nuking now. Wind bubble moves north to whiskey Tuesday. Cross your fingers for south wind session in gb on Wednesday if lucky (been happening lately with the heat Surprised ) then maybe a north wind with some long period west&south swell toward Friday. Not so bleak.

Hey, if you are who I think you are - you helped my lady out kiting when she was in SC. Would be happy to help you out with the wind. Check your PMs. I'll give you a list if any spots look good.

Yes we are trying to decide whether to head straight to the south coast or come through the gorge. We will likely make this decision as we are driving out on Wednesday. Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help!

Good wind this afternoon at Florence. (Punchy as hell, but blowing 7m.) For what it's worth.

late day WNW push often seen on these hot days, when the Coast always stays cool.

Jones beach is east of Astoria, has easy launching, 10mph higher winds across from launch (get to WA side--it's called nuclear alley for a reason--plus nice swell in there sometimes) , and flatwater lagoons in the Slough.

Be aware that tide plays the biggest factor in determining current and therefore effective wind speed.

enjoy! there's always wind around here somewhere.

FYI, the new sensor at Jones is on the WA side now. I think its called Jones 8A. the direction seems to be goofed up on the sensor though.

According to Weatherflow (they own/maintain these sensors, publish the data as iKitesurf/iWindsurf/iWhatever), the funky direction readings are due to an osprey perching on the wind vane. At that point the osprey becomes the vane, and the sensor turns about 90 degrees to the actual wind.

That happens, but not so often when the pressure gradient is this offshore.

It can turn around quickly sometimes (from offshore to onshore) - what you need to look for is when the wind at Astoria turns from northerly to southerly, and the temperature drops substantially. Oftentimes you'll see a tongue of clouds along the shore, working their way up along the coastline from the south in the satellite imagery. If that tongue makes it to the Columbia, then Jones has a good shot at going big.
