last week I received the boardriding maui paipo board.

this board upon first glance looks like a cross between an old school direction snowboard and a skim board.

it's pretty wide and has some concave on the bottom side, with nice generous nose rocker keeping the hull on top the water.

I have yet to take this out in ultra light winds, however it's design suggest its going to work well. it comes predrilled for fins so I installed some 2 inch fins to help with stability in the chop.

board turns nice and spins easy enough, yet the fins do keep it on course and makes it non slippery.

I put wax on the deck but might add a deck pad for ease of maintenance.

I've only ridden it once and love the feel, making this board as fun to ride as my glide skate, but also allowing me to ride it in much choppier conditions without fear of pearling the nose.

being more like a skim board type construction it's gonna make it much easier to travel with than a surfboard.

How did you get one on the Mainland, the website suggests they are only available on Maui?

basically an adaptation of the original, about 3/4" wider, 4" longer, cedar instead of paulownia, core taper developed to make the rocker, etc.

It's fun to ride, ok in light wind, roughly equal to a surfboard, handles chop, carves and slides... Still working on the pop technique.

Ok as a wakesurfer too.

Tried it in shorebreak as a paipo too, it's great for that!

Added some carbon this spring to improve low end and pop, helped with both. Especially pop, it's effortless compared to before.

Looks? Well, it is what it is.

Next time I would just make the core a hair thicker, I liked the "all wood" look.

Funny, this post inspired me last fall to build my own board over the winter/spring.

I just finished it last week. A combination of my own laziness, cheapness, and lack of woodworking tools resulted in my board being more of a wakeskate with a plywood laminate and channel bottom.

I haven't gotten to try it yet.

I know, I'm setting myself up with that one....
