August always sucks. Thermal dynamics. Warm air over warm water creates instability in the atmosphere. Sea water temps are higher in August as it is also supposed to be the hottest month. A little more complicated than that, but basically: August always sucks

It sucks when it doesn't blow. It's been one of the best seasons ever this year and I think we've gotten a bit spoiled. I'm actually glad that I've finally gotten a week off the water to get some things done, ymmv  |

I hung more siding on my house in August than I had anticipated = sub optimal wind conditions. July was pretty badass for wind = no siding was installed 
Sweet southwesterlies on the coast today...someone had to score...Bueler? Bueler? |

I kited 23 out of the first 24 days in August. Only once did I have to leave Hood River and then only had to go to Stevenson. I thought August was great!

I kited 18 out of 23 days could have done more but my 62 year old knees said " come on dude give me a break". The 3 days have been light, which is normal towards the approach of fall. Looked at my previous logbooks and this August has been normal. Last month spoiled us for the rest of our careers and June was way above average!

August was great! Sure this week is off to a slow start, but don't give up yet. AND it is starting to feel like Easterly weather !

First of all, the second half of July sucked for the coast as I rarely ride on the Columbia anymore and can’t comment to the wind quality or its frequency. So did most of August for the coast. Last week there was a small window of good winds, but that shutdown. I'm not talking about the southern coast either as I rarely go down there as its such a haul; Newport to the Columbia.
East winds in the late summer are the best of all East winds as the water is low, water temps are warm, its usually hot outside, access is easy as well as launching and landing, the wind quality is the most steady of all East winds and sometimes they last all day (mainly talking about Rooster). Lot D is a different story, but a long haul for getting some and sometimes it doesn’t always work. Plus all it is is flat water and or chop.
The terrain is more interesting with the water level being lower there as there are small alleyways, pools, and sandbars that have been created. Sturgeons abound everywhere within these shallows, and if your launching from Super, Super, secret spot (SSSS), you get to wade amongst the salmon and occasionally bump a few with your lower legs. And of course, Captain American is out with all his buddies;-0
But let's be honest, it’s the harbinger that Fall and Winter are coming. And wind and current going in the same direction is, well, rather boring to me it's like mowing the lawn, especially if your point sailing. I really only enjoy RR if I'm doing a downwinder from BV, Dalton or SSSS.
And yes, Coastie residents, the South winds are hard to predict, but I was envious yesterday as you all were getting your goofy foot madness on--I love that. I think the swell has decent size, too?

| I think that was it...I was kiting great, steady warm winds since the end of March. The great spring and early summer were amazing and I think I just have wind hangover. Psyched for Rooster easterlies this fall! |

| I've take summer vacations the last 2 summers in August in the gorge and have been scr*wed 2 years in a row. Sure I could get the big kite out but it's more fun drinking beer at Elliot Glacier. I'm moving the gorge vacay to mid July next year. |

| Sorry for hijacking the post. I know Rooster downwinders are pretty much the thing to do in Fall but typically how is the wind in HR through the fall and into Dec? do many people continue to still go out? |

At some point the western winds die. And all is that is left is the East wind. Latest I've ever kited out at Rooster is Dec 8th, and it was a low rain Fall so there was plenty of beach to be had. At some point the 100 degree rule comes in effect for me (combine air and water temps and if 100 or less, go do something else).
Lot D at the mouth of the Columbia has winter kiting, more so starting in Jan and Feb when periodic east winds hit RR. |

consider yourself lucky. I would trade my right arm for that much wind. I have got to kite twice since June. Idaho makes you appreciate the gorge.

Isnt there another factor to this rule? 45 degree water and 45 temps are pretty ideal in the Puget sound in the winter |

Look qt all the cloud cover we had in august. Cloud cover is one of the biggest factors in wind quality.
