Saw a kiter and wind surfer down in the water in close proximity at lower Wells. Kiter got up and rode away. Windsurfer not.

Male; I believe on slingshot kite but don't quote me on the kite just yet.

Again I am relaying these from the person that was hit. Windsurfer was sort of stunned by the accident . Male kiter around 35 sailed away in 10 seconds this happened super fast. Went to water start and saw the mast had broke. Start swimming to shore when a windsurfer came and towed him to shore at the hook. That is all a have for description.

As i do agree the responsible person should come foreward in private to the pole lover, I am sure that it had to have been a unfortunate accident.
I can't imagine landing on a pole dancer would ever be that intentional.

If someone doesn't come foreward I am sure we can rally together and get a mast for the person..... how many of you old guys have sweet windsurf gear collecting dust.

Probably one of the kooky pros... Twisted Evil

Hit and run in the hood. Who had the right of way.

I am all for rallying together. Can we make donations to the Windsurfers shop of choice? Does someone have a replacement mast they are not using?

Same here. If a shop is willing to start a collection, I'll pitch in 10%.

He found a top half at one of the stores. THE ISSUE I HAVE with this is that the kiter should have stayed around and gave him some assistants make sure everything was O.K. & towed him to shore. Give names and information.

Of course the kiter should have stuck around and made sure the other person was safe regardless if he/she was another kiter, a windsurfer , a SUPer or a kayaker. This person either 1) just freaked out and lost their mind 2) is a bad, not so good person .

This person is not a representation of the kiting community .

I do not condone leaving a scene in any way but in this case is there any chance the kiter smacked himself so hard with the mast that he smacked his own face etc or took a shot to his ribs or any other particular place that made him think I better get my ass to shore and check myself. Maybe he looked back and the pole surfer and noticed the windsurfer was in better shape than he was. If he hit the mast hard enough to break it from some height it is not hard to imagine he might have had a pole enema which scared the shit out of him. no pun intended.

I have had my son on the other end of this kiting when he was learning and two people playing off the areas of the end of the sandbar area tomahawked his lines and they left him swimming;safety blown etc in the mighty triangle scared as shit and no one said anything like sorry to him etc. He got brought in by a ski. Just take a look at your own self and make sure you dont repeat this. I kite and it still pissed me off that the kiters were too cool to say sorry as it made him turn to the dark side and learn to windsurf. I want him back on my side as I am tired of hauling his massive piles of gear around.

We are only seeing this through the wonderful internet forum. No he should not have been jumping to land on anyone etc and this is not condoned but shit happens... Not by most on here.

There was some Kiter on 36' sailboat violence today (no injuries)

I think he is moving on to larger prey - the recount from the yachtsmen "this guy is sittin in the water and the kite whips by just missing the shrouds, really close call and then WHOOSH! the kite whips back and wraps us"

Stay frosty out there

I also would donate $$, regardless of any details about the accident. This would be worth it just for the good will towards the windsurfing community from us kiters

If she breaks your pole

A: she might be a bit large
B: she's a bit too aggressive
C: she's a keeper
D: all of the above

OK, I was not going to post this but since someone else brought it up, this was me.

I was no where near the boat at around 330 in the afternoon. My kite went into a death spiral, i was clearly in the water and with no board, being dragged downwind. I had been there for a few minutes. The boat was very far away and then started coming right at me. I was being dragged big time and was trying to correct either hooked up outside lines or my inside lines were wrapped around the bar. The guy driving the boat really made no effort to avoid me and my kite wrapped around the mast. He should have been no where near me.
I was very apologetic even though I had no control over the kite. The boat then turned, and the lines went underneath the keel.

I pulled my release and those guys pulled me on board, picked up my board and kite and dropped me near shore. My lines where wrapped so they went back to the marina and pulled the lines off.

I was just lucky it was not a barge that was coming at me. The yachtsman were also apologetic and very nice. So it took me about 2 hours to untangle my lines and nothing was broken. It turned out fine. When I picked up my shit we both apologized to each other, me for ruining their Saturday out and them for almost killing me.

My first kite trip to the gorge and my first true kitemare. I will say that the people in the gorge are super friendly and helpful. Had a great visit.

I'll donate some cash to get this guy a new mast.

Also, were there any cameras in the area (web cams or people taking pics). Even if the camera didn't catch the incident it would give us an idea of what kites were out there and we may be able to narrow down who done it.

thats some bad luck skideeppow

generally my assumption on the Columbia is that most larger vessels are going to mow you over, though smaller ones will also surprise you. As a boat owner i'm equally amazed at how close kiters and windsurfers like to cut it when crossing in front my boat and also by the outrageous variety of margaritas that are available to the lucky Columbia river yachtsman.

I doubt the good fellows of C dock made the distinction between your kite in a death spiral and the 200 other kites whizzing about all crazy - DON'T EXPECT BOATS TO YIELD, EXPECT TO GET RUN OVER - this also applies to swimmers and downed kites, head on swivel, act fast, objects in mirror are closer than they appear, swim hard, gear is replaceable...
