Boy I agree with most of these comments. Kiting is not a cheap sport, visit SPI for lessons. Our wind and locations are just the shits for learning. PLUS proper instruction is required! If you can’t spend the money, don’t play. PLUS and MORE important this sport is deadly, very deadly.
Anyone know how many times this year someone was sent to the hospital? At least two very bad accidents that I know of occurred.
Now if you’re pissed off at my comments, would you teach your partner to rock climb, use old rope and gear? Go to locations that are above the student’s ability? I also agree that the Lyle site is useful for some levels of teaching and advanced riders need to be polite and respectful. Just realize you are not at the sandbar. It’s no different than learning windsurfing skills like water starts at Rowena or sailing as an intermediate windsurfer at the hatchery. |

Yeah, I know at least four serious injuries, all really good riders, all riding in shallow water... Three right in the ponds in HR and one in Lyle. If you're doing powered loops and tricks in shallow water at Lyle, you're foolish; that's your choice though. Everyone knows the dangers of doing big tricks in shallow water... and that's without the logs, deadheads and other crap that is lurking under the water there.
If you're doing them on top of where beginners are learning, you're foolish and a jerk.
Yeah its a free river, and all that, but bottom line, there is lots of space for everyone. There is a lot more easily accessible space to anyone who can ride upwind. When you are a beginner, you are greatly limited by this inability to ride upwind. Short of throwing down on a jet ski assisted lesson or going to SPI or Baja, there is nowhere in the Gorge that easily facilitates learning. Every site has its challenges (access, traffic, bad wind, other beginners, you name it...)
Being kind to others and showing compassion to those learning is something that would benefit everyone and harm no one. Complaining that there is someone "in your way" when you're the one riding circles around them, going upwind, and doing whatever you want whenever you want, makes you look like a dick.

I don't bump or tomahawk beginners...learn to read. I ALWAYS help beginners if they are willing to listen & learn but turn them over to PROFESSIONALS. I don't bump or tomahawk in general. However, when you try to just say in a nice way .."hey man..could you please just give these guys some space and they say - "F-off, you don't own the river"...well if my kite happens to tomahawk next to them....oh well.
Hauty advice? Spi is the least expensive place to go. If you think staying at a Super 8 for $29 a night, $1 taco's, renting a Uhaul and flying Southwest is Hauty. I'll take the compliment. I didn't say go to Maui. Jeez.
The purpose of my post was to educate all the new people so we don't get shut down or you all get tickets... and to bring civility to the beach. While I'm at it. Leave your damn dogs at home too.

Each location is different
Each day is different
Each student's learning curve is different
The consistent elements are:
Rail Road tracks are a bad place to be.
Parking a car needs to be done legally and with care.
Kites parked between 11:00 and 1:00 will make impossible for other kiters to cross up wind.
Please avoid conflict with RR police and State troopers.
In the gorge, 12:00 is not neutral, it's up, and parking a kite there is a bad idea.
Lowering your kite to allow another kilter to pass is both polite and safer for you.
