Yes FlyDunes - I put the sensor in and have visited it for repairs on a number of occasions. If there is a better USCG navaid location, I am definitely interested.

I was simply making sure that people understood this sensor is out on the river - you have to agree that "behind trees" is slightly vague considering they are located over 1000ft away.

Have a photo of your proposed relocation?

The sensor certainly doesn't appear to be located far from the trees from the perspective of the kite beach, but I'll kite over to it today to take a look at the gap behind it and the trees.

The channel marker (AKA "the can") I'm talking about is located on the Oregon side of the river just north of end of the paved parking area. The 1st attachment shows a side view. In the 2nd attachment its located in the upper left of the photo, and the kite beach is in the lower right.

I think that location (along with a lot of other potential locations) were considered before the sensor was installed, but it was rejected for some reason.

PostSat Jun 08, 13 6:19 pm    That Guy Stu is correct. Sensor is in a good location Reply with quote

So I finally made it up to the sensor location, and Stu is correct. Even though the sensor is due north of the kite beach and in line with the trees, there's at least 1000' between the sensor and the trees. Its NOT right at the base of the tree line like it looks from the kite beach.

The sensor looks like it's in a perfectly reasonable location, it's not in the immediate lee of the trees, and I'd assume it's providing accurate wind conditions for the beach.

My apologies Stu. If there are any other forums you'd like me to post my apologies to, I'd be happy to do so.

Well, if that's the case, then something must be wrong with the sensor, no?

Wouldn't need to be...

It could be that the wind is just stronger on the Oregon side of the river (i.e., the opposite of at Jones). Or maybe the wind just isn't that strong at Sauvie - which is more or less what I've heard from most people.

FlyDunes - glad you had enough wind to get up there and check the sensor out. NWKITE is the only forum I heavily troll so no apologies necessary elsewhere (or here for that matter).
