Does not effect kiters unless you ATV there or camp overnight.

Slither, you know you'll miss it because you're good at all those, other than running over lines. Luckily, there's still Saturdays and Wednesdays! Twisted Evil

Does anyone know how this proposal got started? Did the fisherman get this proposal started? If so, I can pretty much guarantee you that kiters will be the next next on the banned list. Kiters also use Jones as a Toilet.

On its face this looks like it will benefit kiters; however, will kiters be the next banned users for Jones. I am curious as to who is supporting this proposal and do they only have a beef with ATV users?

This does impact us kiters in a lot of ways. It is also being brought up that Jones be closed to everyone!!!!! Because of the bathroom issue. Jones would be shut down for the summer fro emergency ORS provisions and health hazard Bull Shit.

Also once they ban ATV sand people, it is a given that all vehicles will be banned next, it is how government works. And if you think otherwise your living in the clouds and haven't paid attention to our government the last 15 years.

I'd like to know how they came up with the hours and days of ATV use? wed and sat from 9am-9pm? Sound ridiculous and very poorly thought out by pin head morons!!!!

Dont forget this will ban all of us from camping at jones and I do camp their several times a summer, not to mention beach closed at 10pm in peak summer? Yikes!

I am still kitingat 10pm sometimes, I regularly leave Jones around 10:30-11pm.

I know ATV sand people can be a problem and redneck common sense can sometimes be seriously lacking, but when government steps in to regulate the few, soon the masses suffer including us kiters. I don't want to see poeple lose their playground even with a few asshole atv pricks screwing with all of us, kiters could be singled out and restricted just as easily.

I think all sports should have the freedom to use the beach but for how many reckless and rude sand peoples at Jones I would not be opposed to signs stating state ATV laws and the occasional enforcement from Law Enforcement. I think that is a more common sense and fair way of approaching this situation.

I know most of the sand people don't have the required gear, licenses, and riding permits required by state law. How about we start with that and I bet you would see a brand new Jones Beach very quickly with almost no to a very few stupid riders.

If you want to get rid of these bad seed sand people just bring Jones beach up to the 20th century and start ticketing riders who don't wear helmets and dont get the state riding permit and the rest will fall into place.

We kiteboarders could be singled out just as easily as sand people. All we need is one complaint from a ship and Jones could be shut down to kiters also. But thank goodness us kiters are 10 timers smarter than the rest and have respect!!!!!

A bathroom would be awesome, I was actually working on getting a outhouse located at west end of Jones for us kiters, was hoping to have it placed by end of the month.

If anyone else want to protect one of the gorges best kiting locations then write some letters, make some phones calls and show up to this meeting and tell them NO!! You cannot shut down our beach!!

Will post contact info soon.

CALL and WRITE them below and tell them they are being excessive, overreaching and discrimination against the hundreds of people who enjoy Jones beach every year!

Tell them we don't want closed hours and lose our camping. Let the director know that the emergency request under ORS. 144-88-007 because it dies not qualify under state ORS and is unnecessary, it is unfair and outragous.

Under the proposed rules the language used states that it would be illegal to back your jet ski into the water at jones beach because it is not a official launch.

That would screw several people Jon and me.

Nate, have you had a chance to speak with anyone directly at the Dept of State Lands Office, or either of the hearing officers for this case?

It might be a good idea to do some deeper research into what the mechanics of this proposal consist of and what they are attempting to accomplish before you go in with guns blazing.
There could be other issues at hand, and some of those could possibly favor kiteboarding if you share a position of support for the environmental safety of the Jones beach. It could be either good or bad, but you should really research a lot of this information by speaking directly with the DSL office or more specifically the officers in charge of this hearing.

I know from our experiences (CGKA) in dealing with the Port of HR, City of HR, State Parks Dept/Agencies and Department of State Lands, that there is usually a reason for why things are occuring, whether it be a budget shortage or a public ordinance proposal.

Just some food for thought to make sure you go through this experience as a relationship building situation with the DSL, instead of the other way around.

From an economic standpoint. We often stop at the shell station for snacks and fuel on our way to Jones. We also often stop for dinner at Ixtapa on the way out. I wouldn't be surprised if quad riders do too. So that would be 5 days a week of lost revenue from quad people.
A counter proposal might be an outhouse.
Bring the Oregon rulemakers out there one day a week and the bushes will be clean, because they all seem to suck sh@t.

There is an exception for public and private vehicles doing company business so anybody pimping kites or lessons still has access...

Phuk man. I never thought that getting into kiting was going to have me needing to attend so much government stuff.

When i read this whole thing I didn't think it had much in the way of initial impact to kiters. I agree with Nate/Moto that if this goes, then where does it stop. Kiters/Windsurfers have to be in the itty bitty minority of people that use the beach, so if the ATV folks lose it then beach recreation users probably lose a large part of their representation. This could pretty easily give way to us losing access as well.

I'll send a message to jonesbeach.rulemaking@dsl.state.or.us today.

As a community we seem to do the right thing and self police in the gorge, this is likely a wake up call to be better behaved at Jones and treat it with similar respect as we do Gorge launches. Things like driving a responsible speed along the farm roads, parking off the road/out of the way, picking up after yourself, etc. Jones has always been cool cuz its a bit lawless (also cuz the wind rocks). I've seen the ATV folks do some funny stuff like jump a dodge neon, funny to me but maybe its not funny to the locals. Im betting part of the problem is that the people that live out there dont appreciate the disruption by those that dont live there.

I think the bathroom thing is a little silly. It is a public land space/beach like a lot of other places, and like a lot of other places is far from any amenities/conveniences. If ya gotta go ya gotta go. Putting in a honey bucket or a couple seems like a great idea, doesn't seem like gov't would have to 'bail out' jones beach to accomplish this. I dont think kiters do it much as we are some cross section of too civilzed, prissed up, and in a hurry to shit in the bushes and leave the evidence. But, if you do, figure out a way to make it right (no elaboration necessary).

Anyway, users of Jones Beach unite. Let us ensure the tyranny of whitey the man does not fuck our shit up.

I went to Jones Beach last year and it's a Jem of a spot for public land. I'd worry about some cranky fisherman, or annoyed neighbors trying to shut it down. If I was a regular there I'd be all over beach clean ups, garbage cans, and an outhouse. A few signs with some user guidelines and maybe designate a camping area.

I've seen awesome public land get closed to hundreds of people who use it everyday because they didn't even notice the one negative person petitioning the government. So because I want to go to Jones Beach again, and possibly even camp out if it's not too windy I wrote a letter asking for the beach not to be closed. Maybe I'll even drive up there for a clean up day and some kiting.

Good Luck guys!

Crying or Very sad
I come down from Canada and kite at Stevenson , Hood river , Jones and then the coast and back . I love staying at Jones as it's quiet in the early season . It does suck about no shitters as it's gross . I poop in my camper toilet and pee in my wetsuit. I don't give a hoot about sharing with the Quadders . Red necks are people too . I keep an eye out for the Barges/ships . They have right of way and it's stupid not to give it or get too close in case of mishap .
Why is this happening ? I know why , because someone has taken the time to write a report and complain . Trying to defend another position on the use of this area is now much more difficult as the negative is already there . ( by said asshole )
As a tourist and a firm believer in the freedom of movement , use of public or in our case Crown lands is a right we must retain ! If you don't like what your seeing look the other way man . As long as I'm not interfering with your shit don't do it to me . Isn't that freedom .
Aww Fuck all good things come to an end Eh ?!
