The windsurfer nick name for the place is Gust-wena for good reason.

Being a kiter and not having windsurfed - are those cables to hold down windsurf rigs in the wind? I see them at the event site grass also. I just figured that is what they are for - but have never seen them being used for anything - wasn't sure.

Thanks for all the info about Rowena. It is kind of a neat spot, but all those rocks have me on high alert. I have helped to rescue at least a couple of kites there. It is an intense spot.

home from the hospital today. severely bruised and sprained left ankle. compound fracture to left ulna, dislocated left radias, shattered left elbow, collar bone broken in three spots. sounds horrific, but no loss of consciousness and no head, neck or back trauma. i am lucky. full recovery is 3-5 months.

21 years of windsurfing and 8 years of kiting experience all boiled down to a couple bad decisions on my part. i've self launched there many times in the past just like i tried to on monday. that false security blinded me to the dangers that were otherwise obvious on that day.

i can't say enough thanks to tom and brian for the help. i truly owe my life to them. thank you. thanks for the positive thoughts. my season is over with for now. good luck to everyone, be safe and have fun.

Lloyd, so sorry to hear about the injuries. Glad no long-term or major damage though.

When you're feeling well enough, would you mind taking us through what happened, so we can learn and try not to make the same mistakes? Thanks.

Lloyd, glad to hear you're "ok" as in alive and looking at a full recovery. Sella's right, 5 months puts you back on the water in late August.... that's plenty of time to get a good season in. My last day was Nov 6th last season! Get better Lloyd!

Sounds like Karma worked in Lloyds favor that day. There is Probably no better "Thanks" for a rescuer than to one day be rescued when in need.
Glad it turned out as well as it did.

Your calmness and lucidity in a highly traumatic situation amazed me, Lloyd...figured it might be connected to your job since you run into burning buildings when everybody else is running out of them. Glad you're on the mend. I felt at the time that you might be thinking that you screwed up. Fact is that s**t happens and it was a really tough day there.
