how about we also close the revolving door between the government(mostly Congress) and big business, where you work for the government, give big tax breaks to a business and then get out and get a job for that same company (as a lobbyist!) for big bucks. should be seriously illegal...

I guess it's picking the lesser of two evils. I don't want to pay taxes, but I do. When a person who makes minimum wage, works full time, and has no access to health care goes to the hospital who pays for it? Answer.........???
Yep, you guessed it, we do.

If we imprison a nonviolent drug offender for using drugs and then he/she gets out and does it again who pays for it? Ding........we do.

The majority of our budget is being spent on military. Our foreign policy during the Bush/Cheney years was not very good. We ended up removing a dictator that we helped to fight Iran. The lack of planning is now leading to an Iran that is supporting, funding and providing refuge to terrorists who's Jihad will continue until we win the war of ideas not weapons. We are going to have to spend money to help not fight.

The neoconservatives that run Fox tv would like you to believe that less red tape is a good idea. I think it's the less government and less regulation idea that leads to people being less empathetic. When I see a person going to the unemployment office I know that they want to work. If I see a person going in and out of jail I know they need some type of help. If you don't provide that they are simple going to repeat offend until they can learn to do something else.

I want to help my community produce workers who are prepared for the world of new jobs in high tech. I like Germany's model, but it's really controversial, but it works. I like creating incentives for companies to stay in the US and not take the jobs overseas.

I also like Slingshot Kites because they are better than best. But Best got two of our team members to jump ship. I'll miss them, but I'll still fly Slinghot kites because they are made in the USA, aren't they?

I guess the forum is made up of different people with different opinions on kites, politics and favorite beers.

Cheers,

Competition is one of the greatest ways to improve efficiency and outcomes. The united states with 50 states is perfectly setup to allow 50 different systems so that we can see what works and what doesnt work. The challenge with federal programs is that they are so complex it is virtually impossible to know in advance if a program is valuable. Furthermore without competition it is almost impossible to remove a program because we dont know how life would be without the program. Federal programs almost never die even if they dont work at all. When programs are implemented at the state level, proponents and opponents can point to examples in other states.

If drugs were legal in some states and illegal in others then it would be clear which way works the best. Because they are illegal at the federal level it is very difficult for people to picture how life would be if they were legal. Moreover if drugs were legal in a state, then people could move to that state if they wanted legal drugs or move away if they felt it was detrimental to their life style.

In the US you have high tax high service states like new york and lower tax and lower service states like south dakota. You have a choice.

The question shouldnt be should we have those social programs, but should we have them at the federal level.

Competition definitely helps to improve kites and creates efficiencies in the marketplace. When one mfg makes something valuable (bow kites) others will copy. When one mfg does something stupid (high bar pressure kites) others will stay away from it.

yah Moto. I know, but some of the Inspector Generals have already found almost as much waste as the Sequester....

I think the government would have less waste if the IG's or some other people were able to find the waste, if congress agrees it's a waste that department not only looses the budget for the "waste" but looses 2-3 times the waste in their budget for the next year. Maybe then the government would work more like a profitable business, cutting the unnecessary, over paid, etc.

Solid idea.

BTW - in your previous comment about people in jail. Its somewhere around $40,000 a year to incarcerate an individual.

Lotta wasted cash housing and feeding persons that are not contributing to our economy.
