It's only a matter of time. This article reconfirms my happiness the River Keepers exists.

only a few hunderd gallons per year we think.

IMAGINE if that was a private leak they might make a big deal about it but since its public and they have no cash ....... they are on it tho so don't you worry your pretty face...

I took an environmental chem class once where we looked at tritium plumes from leaks at Hanford. The ultimate conclusion was that 100 or even 1000 gallons per year in a river that flows at 100+ tanker trucks of water / sec gets diluted to less than natural trace isotopes in a few hundred yards.

Even though it sounds horrible, it's not something to stay out of the river over.

in other words: the solution to pollution is dilution!

Sounds like the science says dump it in the river

So the natural levels plus the oops leaky levels equals still less than natural levels

Sounds like good science to me

Is there a launch there , sounds like its all good.

I also used to work at CH2MHill Environmental Chem lab as an environmental chemist. We ran Hanford samples and they have some bad stuff for sure. I actually switched careers because it's so nasty. I just want to balance the "omg it's radioactive, any amount will kill me" hype from the news. Yes they should clean their shit up asap, but it's not going to ruin my session.

I'm most concerned about bacteria levels because I've gotten river nose from the Columbia a few times.

Radioactive sludge is not important. What's important is that there might be some mountain biking trails getting built on Mt. Hood. Now that's something environmentalists can really rally against. Woohoo!

The leaks are nothing new so as soon as you say Hanford layoff an article will pop up about radioactive waste leaking into the river. Government cuts funding, Hanford cry's wolf, it works every time... The Hanford Vitrification plant is going to take years to finish and truck loads of money. Let's just hope the sludge doesn't get stuck in the pipes on its way into the building Confused

Ha it's gov't. They have no f'ing clue. Remember when they (Bush and Rumsfelds) said the Iraq war would be over in two weeks and cost like 250 million total--they sure were close with that estimate.
