Lou is always outside the box.....way outside. Artistic mixed with crazy. Via a mutual friend I met him and Flash Austin in an apartment on the HR heights when they were both riding for Wipika back in the day. Wipika and Wainman Kites have a lot of mutual DNA. Austin came off as somebody who had difficulties tying his shoes while my friend was giving Lou a bad time about his 2-line prototype he flew with his thighs/hips. Yep, lines attached to your lower body so your leg and hip movements controlled the kite while you rode totally hands free. It was going to be the bridge to pure surfing and he was pretty passionate about it and believed it was possible. I bet somewhere in his garage collecting dust is an old 2-line Wipika Free Air prototype sitting next to some sort of harnessed kite pants. He did love those kite pants. |

Gman wrote: | What year did he pioneer that self-launch? | A while ago is my guess, he's always doing shit that pushes the envelope. Lou was the first to show me a beach launch by running past his kite from a downwind position(kite nose into the wind) and just pulling it straight into the air. I still remember it as one of my favorite moments in kiting... Went something like "hey Steve watch this".... boop... straight into the sky LOL. It's one of the reasons a grew to love the Wainman kites... aside for great de-power and grunt... they are super easy to self launch. (sorry that wasn't a promo ad... just a comment) |
