genek wrote: | Tony, I'd say it's a bit of both. Tons of coast line with few photographers around to witness the action. Additionally, for consistent predictable barrels you typically want a reef. Most wave kiting spots on the northern west coast are breaking on sandbars which are less abrupt and shift more resulting in less predictable and less frequent barrels. Perhaps we're just not kiting in the right spots though. Surfers seem to be getting it a lot more around here. |
Zackly.
Perhaps as important as reefs and good sandbars is our underwater bathometry. The OR coastline really starts about 200 miles offshore and gradually gets shallower until the coastline. This kills groundswell and reduces their effect the closer they get to shore. Alternatively CA's shore starts about 50 miles. That is why CA has, as a whole, better and more consistent waves. Even more pronounced on subtropical islands where its basically deep, then not deep immediately. Other than a very few standout spots and the shifting sandbars, you're not going to get consistent or common 'legit' barrels here - and seems when it does, it is usually large surf.

Gawd! Thanks for killing my motivation to surf in Oregon! Alternatively, you just up'd my priority to move to an island.

seen very few barrels here but yes definately big surf and probably not surfable
but with a kite speed advantage ive seen sneeks within...
on those days i have not seen strapless out
sure you can get out on 12' days strapless but 12' swell or more days is big o faces and gettin out with straps can be hit and miss, every miss is not good for the mind. With long intervals helps but storm big swells stuff usually is more like a warzone with big logs and foam mmmmmmmm
youd all be better to go somewhere else tho this place sucks .........damn gwbush

First, Oregon gets plenty of big and hollow waves. And if you think this place is small and mushy, then just try cruising out at any of the open ocean beaches when the buoys are bigger than 6' and the swell is long period and out of the west. It is a game of playing cat and mouse on the bigger swells and we are definitely the mice.
From border to border virtually all of Oregon's kitesurfing spots are beachbreaks which are inherently flawed with imperfection. You will never get consistent, mechanical waves at any beachbreak because the bathemetry lacks the shallow water against deep water like you see at perfect reefs and points. However, you can hook into some damn fine ones that will reel off perfectly amoungst the close-outs. This is where experienced wave riders will excel and get good ones while the masses look lost in the confusion. Watch the line-up for an extended time and it becomes obvious that a few kitesurfers are shining while the rest are just mowing the lawn and not riding waves.
Getting back to the original post, whether it is possible to get cover-ups in Oregon. Personally, I believe the waves around here are way more tailored for carving turns (bottom turns and lip hits), thus that is where I prefer to focus my wave riding when I finally do get the chance.

There are definitely barrels to be had in Oregon, maybe not on a kite, but they're around. Gotta get in where you fit in.

the only barrels in Oregon are full of beer. All the real barrels are in Santa Cruz. and Indo.

I think you did Gene - unless you were saying those guys have been in Indo charging barrels, which they may be (in all fairness I guess it was regi).
"Definitely people doing it (Gman, Twinfin, Tekko, Chanson, etc.). Might be spread out more than before. I wish I'd gotten out more lately, but an injury made me opt to stay in. Getting out strapless in big swell is definitely harder, but with some finesse it's doable even in 15ft+ swell. I think there's some team retard photos floating around somewhere to prove it."

Haha, fair enough Tony. I guess I was discussing their frequency and ease of access, not whether they exist. I'm sure they exist on any big coastline. More an issue of finding them.
Man, now I wanna ride some big waves. I haven't had an epic wave sesh in like 2+ years or something insane.
Gman, I got some vacation saved up. Tis the tow season no? Wink wink.
