But with the dog thread(and I love dogs)

If it is the same post every year, then isn't this a pretty viable issue?
Maybe not to be taken up here, but still...

no responses necessary or wanted, just something everyone should think about

You have a point, however, when people start talking about using hand guns and beating dogs and each other maybe a line is crossed. If people can start talking about it responsibly it's worth discussing otherwise it might belong on another, more hateful, forum.

2 things on last post.

1. People don't talk about much responsibly on this forum, it tends to always swing toward some form of extreme joking/criticism/etc. it's a kiteboarding forum, we act like kiteboarders

2. When and at all possible, keep your beefs on the beach. As far as I'm concerned there are two types of kooks. The kind that call other people kooks, and the kind that see things on the beach but don't do anything about them then and use the forum to 'let the community know'

If you own one of the breeds listed at this site and allow it to run around where families are hanging out , who is the one acting "responsibly"? Some of these have been bred to fight and kill... that was the primary motivation behind the bloodline. When a pitbull walks by me with no owner in sight, I get about the same feeling as when I'm around an ignorant gun owner who sweeps me with their barrel.

Number of automobile deaths yer year in the US - around 40,000
Number of gun deaths per year in the US - around 30,000
Number of dog attack deaths per year in the US - around 10

Dogs and sharks, they freak people out. Guns and cars, that's what actually kills you.

you are talking about certain types of people, or certain types of dogs? my pittbull was bred to tolerate rough handling from his people, and he doesn't blink when a power jumping kid lands on his head.

dog leashing is basic stuff, there is no need to spread the hate

I've posted this before: Animal Control: Hood River County Animal Control Officer 541-387-7037. Save this contact in your phone.

The animal control officer is not an armed deputy, just a person employed by the county who has the authority to capture animals running at large, and cite their owners.

If you're having issues with a dog, regardless of how bad you might feel about the punishment for a bite, your only option is to call animal control. It's better you let someone who's educated on the laws, has the authority, and can remain calm deal with them.

Perhaps the solution here is a large sign with Animal Control's contact number?

It's about respect, and a some people just don't care.

I was walking on the beach after a session last week, noticed a dog running around sniffing people, thought to myself, yeah, another example of an unleashed dog being a nuisance, probably dropped a load somewhere too, and a minute later my sandwich gets bitten right out of my hand from behind, didn't see that one. The owner comes over and yells at the dog and is like are you ok ??? I'm thinking, why isn't this dog on a leash, you obviously don't have control over this animal. When I left the beach, the dog was still running around looking for more food. Just another dog owner that just doesn't have much respect for the public and/or leash rules.

Hardly a fair comparison. Injuries, rather than deaths, would be fair.

Thank you Forrest. Number is in my phone now. It doesn't pay to do anything stupid.

Bottom line, I will call the animal control on unleashed dogs, if bitten, I will call 911, and press charges. No matter what type of breed, or how nice the owner is.

If you go by injuries than I think household knives would come out way ahead.

Injuries have reporting bias. There are lots of minor household injuries that no-one thinks to report.

Whatever, "reporting bias" is perhaps too much data for a kiting forum, but ask an ER admitting nurse what proportion of the dog bite victim have minor injuries , and how many car accident or gunshot victims just walk out with a bandaid or a few stitches.

Dogs bite a lot, they very rarely cause serious injury, and they almost never kill anyone. That's just the way it is.

I like to yell at people for driving too fast, since that's what's killed all my childhood friends that aren't here anymore.

"Each year, more than 350,000 dog bite victims are seen in emergency rooms, and approximately 850,000 victims receive some form of medical attention. Based on data collected in the USA between 2001 and 2003, the CDC concluded that there were 4.5 million dog bite victims per year, but that figure appears to be rising."

Relevancy to this forum:
Lots of people bring their animals to kite launches. Not just the event site. One time I was standing with my kite in my hand, talking to an individual who had their dog ON A LEASH when the dog proceeded to bite my leg clean through my wetsuit.

I'm actually glad to see this post/thread, because I felt the same way. This forum seems so lopsided sometimes... its ok to complain about not having enough room to teach in front of the sandbar, but a thread where someone is expressing concern about being BITTEN BY A DOG gets locked. If you don't like some of the responses, then censor them. But locking the thread to me just says "look, we don't give a shit what people's dogs are doing out there, too friggin bad!". Obviously if this is an issue that keeps coming up, then there isn't enough being done by some dog owners out there. This isn't like complaining about water levels or access to the Event Site. Getting bit by a dog and then possibly needing to go in for medical treatment isn't just "part of the scene". Dog owners need to be responsible. We repeatedly ask kiters to kite responsibly and make good decisions out there on this forum. If people who are heading out to kite are getting bitten by dogs, or having their kites damaged by out of control dogs, then why is it such a big deal to put up a general post asking dog owners to be more responsible?

It got locked because the discussion was degrading into animal abuse.

This thread is much better.

A dog thread gets locked because it always ends up going in a downward spiral of intimidation and violence that is non-kite related. Not really cool for the stoke-factor and ranting on nwkite only covers a small handful of kiters.......who are typically rock solid dog owners.

There are no bad dogs....just bad dog owners and they need to be leashed....so call Animal Control and be done with it.

Ok, but I'm going to need to see a YouTube video or something before I'll believe that Animal Control will come out and put a leash on the owner! Wink
