That would mean the government would need to stop trying to manipulate energy policy. I'm pretty sure that Representative Ryan supports that. Less government, that is..

Laughing
Yeah, cause Republican Party NEVER manipulates energy policy, Cartels, Big Oil, Oil producing countries, starts wars (do I need to go on) for their personal benefit

Quit hijacking threads to spew your personal agenda Hein

If you want to make a difference you can get involved in "Friends of the Columbia Gorge". They are fighting this battle hot and heavy. Their website is www.gorgefriends.org.

Hein,
Thanks for deluding this into a right/left scrum.
This actually has nothing to do with bubble gum, two party political arguments but, thanks for trying to distract everyone, Hein.

Everyone else,
This issue is very simple. Countless thousands of pounds of toxic coal dust blowing in air and coating all of our favorite launches through the entire gorge regardless of transportation module or if you are a dem or repug. And where do the profits go? Same place they always do, in the pockets of the few at the cost of the many. Do we really want increase our cancer and asthma risks for the profit of a handful of careless tycoons? Nope. How do we quantify the costs of these corps doing business without factoring in the destruction of life and environment?
I don't give a shit about this corporate group's attempt to carve more profit out of our collectively owned country. The onus is on them to prove that their entire operation is harmless and causes no monetary externalities for the all of our communities to cover.

This is not difficult to understand, Hein. The question is, why do you advocate that the public should foot the bill for all of the expected and unexpected externalities of corporations doing "business"? Why advocate for a business to spew toxic dust all over the gorge, take the profit privately and let the public foot the medical bills and clean up bills for decades? Your position is rediculous! Now, gloss over all these messy details and start preaching how toxic coal dust is actually not toxic at all and instead is actually GOOD for you! Tell us how everyone should mix a spoonful a day into our iced tea..

The rich and powerful don't even need to use their money and lawyers when they've got their brainwashed minions fighting their battle for them.

Funny the fingers fly, and the topic never rolls around to the root cause of the issue: our demand for energy. It's all about production and never about consumption and conservation, but the bottom line is it comes down to collective human behavior. What we feel we "need"...

Shut off the lights and go fly a kite.

Update for those following this issue.... DaFazio has weighed on .... in favor of coal exports!

http://democratherald.com/news/local/congressman-backs-coal-exports-to-asia/article_47df8f0e-edab-11e1-a72d-001a4bcf887a.html

DeFazio has some serious juice, he's been in the House forever, he is one of the most senior Democratic reps in the whole country.

Petey D on the "go go coal" side.... it's probably a done deal, at least for exports out of Coos Bay.

true as can be
all we really NEED is a cardboard box with an eight dollar tarp over it near a stream to grow some food
EVERYTHING more than that is what you WANT

it's not bad to want more, just recognize it for what it is and what comes from it

Is there anything more inane than a bunch of rich, white, fun-hogging males talking about their suffering?

My grandfather sufferd like a mofo when he came to the USA at age 12 to work in the mines (granite mines, not coal, probably worse) but since then it's been pretty plush for my tribe. Personally, I can't really blame the Indochineese for wanting a piece of that action.

Well, DeFaz think our coal is cleaner than the coal they're burning now, and DeFaz is the Occupy Wall Street rep, so how can be wrong?

true, but fokiten is so damn funny that no-one really minds

whatever, not trying to stir the pot, but you guys from the northern part of the state might not realize the sort of weight defaz will throw behind this issue. he rescued a whole rail line, he's not gonna let some hippies monkeywrench things now

Just got this email link for anyone interested.

I try to stay out of the Political jibber jabber on here but I see this as more of a public health deal. This is the kind of trickle down I, for one, don't want any part of. As someone who uses the river daily, I don't want any part of the coal export spewing crap in the air and water.

Burn that coal and oil people it makes me and my fellow Albertans rich .
Sell it to whoever wants it . We need the money , lots of it ! So our 16 yr olds can all drive Escalades and Quads and Snow machines worth tons of cash . Wake board boats worth 75k + abound here on our swampy lakes . What would those poor kids do without those toys , just think of the trouble they'd get into .
We want to bring it to you down there too but there seems to be a problem with the pipeline . WTF , don't your kids need gas ?
There should be factories on the banks of the Columbia right behind all those windmills . Keeping the jobs at home eh boys ! A few steel mills never did much harm to the Great lakes . A little coal dust is good for you . Didn't you ever see an underground coal miner leaving the bowels of the earth after a shift ? They have big white toothed smiles ! It must be great !
So , I guess unless you live in a cave and eat cold worms and roots you really should keep your mouth shut when on the river so your teeth will look nice and white too .
Oh but wait , no one wants to get their hands dirty anymore . The young seem to all want to be rich clicking on a computer . Coal and oil gets them there .
How about that eh ?
Pretty fucked eh! There's no way of stopping the greed it seems .
JackZ
I don't care if I offended anyone either , I'm learning this too from our kids these days .
