Tue Jul 31, 12 8:36 pm Traveling to Guatemala, does GOLF bag trick work? |
|
|
I'm traveling to Guatemala Saturday and want to take some gear. Any advice on how to pack my 134 board? Does the golf board trick really work? Do I need to tear the guts out in order to fit the board in? Would love any advice you have from experience. |

I fly to Costa Rica and Nicaragua often and never had to hide my gear. That has only happened to me going to Hawaii. Who are you flying? Delta, us, united and AA have never given me any problems
Never flown to Guatemala, only driven. _________________ "I don't believe in doing work that I don't want to do in order to live a life that I don't want to live."

You just need to study up on your airlines policies and find what works. Golf bags work because many airlines make an exception on the size/weight limits for golfing equipment. |

The golf bag usually works if i sell out a little bit, look a bit more like someone that would golf rather than someone that would use a golf bag to disguise their kite gear. Like slither said, make sure you are in compliance relative to the airlines rules regarding bag dimensions and weight. I think the big bummer about the golf bag is that you just can't take that much gear. I'd rather pay the hundred bux each way rather than potentially settle for half as good sessions cuz my surfboard/skim/little kite/etc were back at the pimpPalace |

I'm flying Delta and they charge for anything over 62" (L+W+H). My board is about 70". I'll wrap it up and see what happens...worst case scenario I have to pay. I don't have a travel bag for it though. Any ideas as to who/where to get one? used? |

Central America is chill with boards...and pretty much anything in general. Flown in and out of the area numerous times and never a problem and I'd pack mule gear in for friends etc. Safe travels. |

The golf bag trick is a thing of the past. 50# limit is the golden rule. If you are at 50# or less, almost any reasonable size bag will work unless you're flying out of a kiteboarding hotspot like SPI. I now fly with a dakine sx185cm bag and rarely get nailed if it's under 50. I have rolling duffle bags that are over the 62" limit. Be chill and smile. And if you get nailed, keep smiling because you kite and they don't! |

Awesome !
I had a bag made several years ago and it has never been a problem at usually 48+or- lbs . It goes to oversize for sure and they ask whats in it . I tell them and it's fine . I pack a 159 door , 140 mako, 2 ktes , harness , bar .......... . I went to Maui twice in the last year with it , West jet from Canada . $20 for the second bag fee , and thats the bag .
SpI as well 2006 and 2010 . St Lucia , Hatterass .....these on US carriers .
It's the 50# for sure , stick to it .
Enjoy your trip
