I don't think anyone rents kites. Gorge Performance is the only kite shop I know of in PDX, but I don't think they do board rentals.

I think some of the gorge shops may rent boards, but pretty sure no one rents kites for the Oregon coast and gorge. Mainly due to insurance for kite rentals, especially due to the gustiness of the winds in the gorge. I only know of a couple places that will rent kites, but they are all east coast.

Big Winds rents boards for sure, and I think Windance does too. It will be "demo" stuff. No one rents kites... Crying or Very sad

Also the few places that do rent on the East coast require that your are a certified level 3 kiteboarder (advanced). They wouldn't rent to beginners anyway, major liability kinda like paragliding, hanggliding, sky diving, etc. If you want to try it out, get lessons, you can use the instructors gear. You will know if you like it or not by the end of the 5 hrs of the usual "intro" lesson.

If you haven't gotten lessons yet, you wouldn't want to rent gear anyway. Too big A chance of ending up dead. It'd be like renting an airplane without knowing how to fly.

If you want to learn to kiteboard, study up on the internet first. http://thekiteboarderschool.com/ http://www.kitesurfingschool.org/ http://www.kitefilm.com/eng/weeklytrick.asp

Then, get a trainer kite with a DVD from an established kiteboarding company. When you totally understand the DVD, and can fly the trainer maneuvers with the trainer kite, and can fly the trainer kite one handed, and can look away from the trainer kite at least when you aren't moving it, then get some lessons. They'll provide the gear.

On a a similar note. We just started a Demo program here at AIRTIME so that you don't have to miss a session when your kite breaks.

We have 2012 Slingshot RPM's and 2013 Slingshot Rally's that can be Demo'd for the day while your kite is being repaired. We are selective in whom we offer them to but in the Gorge kite community we can pretty much tell who knows what they're doing and who doesn't Wink

Riding a 2013 model for the day almost makes it worth breaking your kite!

Depends on the lessons and how fast you learn. Generally - most lessons will do all the safety stuff, teach basic kite flying, teach body dragging, board recovery and such. They will get you up and going. From there you generally work on changing directions, edging, going upwind, toeside turns, successful jumps, self launching on your own. Those things can take many hours to master and it is not cost effective to do it in lessons.
