Just curious whether Hood River gets 4G service/reception from AT&T or Verizon? _________________ Steve

AT&T 4G (LTE) is only in select major metropolitan areas right now. Portland isn't one of those areas yet, and I imagine it's going to be a long time till HR is. |

Yeah you only pay for the 4g phone and service.
Hardley anywhere has it.
It would cut into the bottom line.
Better grow the gov and fix it.

My Iphone 4s with At&t says it is running at 4G next to how many service bars I have. I'm in Portland, pretty sure it says the same in Hood River though.... |

I get 4g with Sprint in Vancouver and Portland. It's spotty, though. I get good enough 3G at Jones to post an OSR and in Hood River I can browse the internets at the event site. |

I could be wrong about that... As far as Sprint: Quote: | Sprint will undoubtedly boast about the speed of their 4G LTE network as a selling point for the HTC EVO 4G LTE, but keep in mind that this network is not widespread. In fact, Sprint has not turned on the 4G LTE network yet. Once it does, the Sprint 4G LTE rollout will start in Baltimore and Kansas City, followed by expansions in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Shoppers who don’t live in these areas will not enjoy the 4G LTE speeds of Sprint’s network until 2013. |
With any of the carriers, it's easiest to get the SpeedTest.net app and test your connection to see if you actually have 4G. In Portland with AT&T, you're really lucky to get 5Mbps downloads. That's 3G. If you're not showing at least 15Mbps you're on 3G. Or your carrier is so slow that what they call 4G might as well be 3G. I've seen up to 35Mbps in some cities, although 25Mbps seems to be more typical. |

Nak you are correct, the iPhone 4s isnt even 4g capable. Guess they are saving that for the next one which is sure to drop within the next few months. _________________ I heart dangling |

Portland was one of the first cities to roll out 4G... it's just that it was WiMAX (think Intel territory). This was done under the brand CLEAR with lots of financial backing by Sprint. NAK is correct in pointing to the competing standard LTE (backed by Qualcomm) which has gained far more widespread adoption (i.e. Verizon, AT&T, MetroPCS providers in US, Nokia in EU, Huawei variants in China). I doubt highly there are towers for any of the 4G standards (WiMAX, LTE, EV-DO) in the Gorge, regardless of what any phone says.
BTW AT&T's 3G was poorly implemented so it didn't take advantage of a good deal of 2G backbone in most of the country (including the Gorge). I kept a dual-mode (digital/analog) 2G phone for nearly a decade, alongside an AT&T 3G phone for two of those years (would have been less if not for the contract). One of the downsides of modern bandwidth use (and crappy phones with internal antennas) is that voice allocation suffers the most, so gone are the days when you "could hear a pin drop" (Sprint's early ad campaign) - say hello to the days of barely hearing conversations. |

I am currently getting 4 bars of 4G AT&T on my iPhone in Hood River. 4G is noticeably faster than 3G. _________________ Livin' in da' Hood |

Nope. The Iphone is only 3G capable. What you're getting is HSPA+, which--while a little faster than HSPA--is still only 3G. The 4G symbol is just AT&T marketing. When you're getting AT&T's real 4G it'll say 4GLTE. Which is WAY faster than any 3G. Like 10 times as fast. Faster than my home cable internet. |
