I have a 1/2 day on Friday... all the forecasts I've been looking at for Friday are showing little wind (max i'm finding is 8mph). Anyone have a guess as to where might have some? Or know a better forecast site than windfinder?

Jones Beach reaching some weak upper teen WNW winds, Stevenson and the Corridor likely reaching mid teen peaks, the Near East and East reaching low teen peaks. Northerlies hold at the coast with upper teens to maybe low 20's for South Coast wave action, but lighter winds farther north with mid teen peaks.

So as of right now my 13m looks like a possibility at Jones... I'll head there and beg for wind. Who knows though. My first time at Jones the forecasts I was seeing the night before was like 3g6... arrived there with 25g35..

Btw where did you get that info from?

That looks like the iKitesurf.com forecast for Friday.

Jones beach forecast and its accuracy has been going through some changes the last few years. Seems like the ikite forecast folks are paying better attention to it this year than last. Maybe it has something to do with who is doing it, how important it is to riders, how much time it takes vs the gorge. At any rate, it seems to be more dialed this year. It also seems like the sensor is more accurate, maybe its a different one, dunno.

This fershur though, Jones is getting talked about a lot more on this forum than I remember at any point in the past.

I know I talk about it a lot. I'm still beginner level... maybe level 2 in the cert levels... but finding Jones fun, not crowded, not too gusty, typically on-side wind, friendly, and typically a couple kiters out there... And from Beaverton, it's about the same time as to get to HR, without the crowds.

The iKite sensor for Jones was down for a while earlier in the year. I think they put up a new sensor, because I have noticed that the iKite Jones sensor is more accurate now. I used to just look at the gusts for the true wind speed. This year - the wind average seems to be the true wind speed on the sensor now.

As far as the forecasts, in a way - they are better now. But they still do not seem to factor in the microclimate issues at Jones. They just take the general cloud cover/rain forecast for the Astoria - Kelso region. Anyone who kites Jones very much knows that a lot of times Jones will be totally blue skies some days when it is fully surrounded by clouds and rain. I am not sure if it is the wind that clears up that spot, or the position of the coastal range creating a cloud shadow that makes Jones nicer than you think it is going to be. So when iKite talks about the Western Gorge being stuck in the clouds - it is not always true for Jones. It seems to me that iKite still focuses its forecasts in the heart of the gorge - Stevenson to eastward. Mostly because that is where there is the highest concentration of kiters. People who like to kite Jones and the coast need to read between the lines a bit, and use other sources to help their forecast.

George McLean who used to work for Windsight (sp?) and then briefly for iWindsurf, was our best Jones forecaster. He understood the micro-climate better than any yet. Wonder where he went? He had his own www page for a time, devoted to windsurfer's Gorge FX. Can't recall the page name.

What we really need is a Jones cam. Someone from the CGKA needs to befriend the owner of that big mansion on the Washington side and talk them into setting up a river cam. Or tell that person in the mobile home and 50 cars in their yard on the Oregon side that we will give them free tickets to the monster truck rally if we can set up a web cam! Shocked

Agreed on all fronts regarding Jones. Its one of my favorites, and a bit of a gem. Even though everyone knows about it and has probably ridden it, it stays mostly uncrowded. Of all places with reliable wind, it is the one spot that can actually take a crowd and leave plenty more room. That said, I'll choose the gorge over Jones often because I feel like the ikite forecast is pretty on it for the gorge, and not so on it (though better than last year) for Jones.

I remember someone asking something about forecasting on this forum a bunch of years ago and George McClean answering. Point being, maybe he reads this forum and has something to say about the Jones forecasting stuff.

Yup.

My forecast is great for me. All I need it 7mph to get planing!

That 19M S3 can be ridden by a 165lb person, all the way to 20mph! Talk about staining the ole shorts!!!

Secret spot 10 minutes from the homestead. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee Hawwwwwwwww!!

Channel Marker

p.s. For those of you with gas, Sauvie might pump up tomorrow, if conditions stay similar to what happened today. From 1pm to 7pm, 11-13mph, NNW, but it might get a little too much West in it (but then nude-ville would work).

But it's my new (used) 19M !!!!! That baby's HUGE.

Not so sure I wouldn't be markin' the channel if that badboy crashed in the light stuff. REALLY freaky to fly in that stuff.

Amen to that!!!!!!! Jones forcasts have been alot more accurate this year than any other year i can recall. Not saying its perfect because its definitly not. I still add 5 mph to most there forcasts and 80% of the timed i'm right. Normally I'm pretty right on with my forcasts but this year has been incredibly tuff!! Weather is down right menoposal this year. Worse than a pregnant girl screaming for baking soda cravings nuts........

The new sensor is very accurate. I've seen it, its located on the wave break on the north side toward the mansion on top of the platform about 15 feet above water level. Its accurate within a few mph due to better wind 19m up in the air compared to water level. I've learned alot about forcasting and debunking some of my theories about wind this last month. its amazing how a coastal front really can change how Jones acts. guess you never stop learning. I will try to do more live wind updates and forcasts on my home page under my twitter account on the right side if people are interested about whether Jones might be kiteable or not..

Also way to nail it Bill!!!

Twitter updates from the true Jones Beach master would be invaluable!
