Tue Jun 12, 12 9:32 am Kite quiver advice? |
|
|
I need to reduce my quiver to 3 kites.
What to do? Two options:
1) 6m, 8m, 11m or 2) 7m, 9m, 12m
All kites are 2011 or 2012 in great condition.
I'm 172lbs and ride both TT & SB.
Which 3 kites should I keep? Used in the Gorge and the coast.
TIA, Rob |

i would personally go 6 9 12 or 6 8 11. a six is an important size to have in the gorge. on those smoke on the water days you will wish you had it! |

Depends on the kites and how rangy they are. Also brand & model. The 6 an d 7 could be equivalent. 6 to 9 is a big jump, but some kites have enough overlap. If they did, I'd say 6, 9, 12. 12 to 9 is a 25% drop, 9 to 6 is a 33% drop. It's not all about "will the kites overlap" but can you hit the sweet spot for one of the kites for all wind conditions. Some kites have a large range for the sweet spot, some much smaller.
I agree the 6 is an important kite in the gorge. I've got 50# on you and I can't imagine not having a 6m. Hell, I've needed my 5m a few times... |

I'm your same weight and also use a tt and sb. I have a 6, 8 10, 14. Gorge/coast time is 50/50. In the gorge, I use the 6 (10%), 8 (60%) and 10 (30%) without missing much water time. On the coast, I use the 8 (20%), 10 (40%) and the 14 (40%). If I had to go with 3 kites, I'd go 7, 9, 12. But you could sell three and buy another one to go 6/8/10/14 or 7/9/11/14. This is assuming all kites have corresponding wind ranges.
Nice problem to have. |

UnBob.....knowing weight helps but it depends on how long you have been riding and how you like to ride. If you're competent on those 2 boards go with a 3 size spread at least: 6,9,12. Your boards will be your range. Run two bars with different lines (1 w/20M and one with 25M) and learn to ride a tad lit. Don't overthink it and let the apparent wind kick in and do the rest. |

I'm just learning with the SB. I'm thinking 6, 8 and 11. But you give some very good advice. And, yes, I already have 2 bars with 20m and 25m lines. |

I had 2011 Rebels 7/9/11 last year. Got blown off the water several days on the 7m. The 2011 7m had a lot of power.
This year, I have 2012 Rebels, and went with 6/9/11. Love all three kites. The 11m is much faster than the 12m, so that is an obvious choice. 6m is perfect for the gorge (Rowena/Rufus). Could have gone either 8m or 9m. The Rebels have such good range on the high end that I went with the 9m.
I'm 200lbs with gear. |

And, yes, I love my Rebels too - awesome kites! |

just out of sheer curiosity, and not trying to be nosey...................
what're the circumstances that have you cutting down the quiver size? Obviously cost, or having the fewest tools that still get the most done are things i think about. Im wondering what the other reasons might be.
This of course is just curiosity, keeps me from doing my job |

I rode 7, 9, 12 Rebels for the last two years and held the 7 down in up to 40 knots. It's really nice to have a 12 for the coast. I'm 185 and ride a twinny. This year I switched to a 7, 9, 12 Vegas quiver and am happy as well. |

+1 for the 6,9,11
gets you the range and still puts you on the 9 as the money kite |
