Windsurfers who launch at Dougs are typically far more skilled than at the Event site and don't need to be freaked out by competent kiters. Dougs has much nicer conditions than Rowena - better swell, less gusty. SS is great but with more people going there access - 84 and RR is bound to come up sooner or later. Most of us are paying for Washington Discover passes so is it unreasonable to ask Washington Parks to take a look at a way for kites to launch and land? Dougs has way more room than Stevenson and the kiters do a great job of getting each other on and off the water there.
CGKA? |
The one time I flew there - it was pretty nice. Pumped up kite on some nice grass. Pebble beach to lay out lines and rig. Shallow bay for launching. Smooth wind and swell. Nice grass to dry kite and pack up. It is small, but it is not as small as Stevenson. If kiters were allowed access to Doug's - they would have to organize it all in a line like at Stevenson to make sure the windsurfers had room also. A section of grass for windsurfers and a section of grass for kiters kind of like at event site could make it work I suppose............. |

You guys are all haters. Rufus is well worth the 40 min drive when the sandbar becomes a crowded mess of kooks.
not to mention the wind is steadier there too. _________________ live for the next windy day |

Only problem with Rufus is that it is a 2 hour drive from Wilsonville. With a drive that long - I like to make it a full day trip with the family and there really is nothing to do for non kiters on the shore. If I am going to make a 2 hour drive - I will usually head to the coast. The family can do beach activities while I am kiting. |

dude, any drive where you can ride with good wind and good room is way better than getting skunked/snaked/cut off/pissed off. |

Not saying that I wont be there. My 6 meter needs to get out of the bag every now and then! Just not my first choice because of the drive. When we have clean steady winds at Stevenson, nice swell at Hatch and Swell City, tons of room at Jones Beach or anywhere at the coast - it is more a matter of deciding what kind of conditions you want that day. We really are spoiled here in the NW with tons of choice kiting locations.............. |

This is a friendly plug, but also an opportunity to learn about some areas East!
I'm available for orientation lessons at any location in the gorge. Give me a pm or an email and let's set something up.
It's important to know the ropes of any place you go kiting.
Go East!! |
