I know some easteries are gonna blow the next few days. curious if anyone knows if the beach is back. I had a session there in early spring and we had to launch from the sticks on the far east side of the park. certainly not worth doing again.

Nope. Haven't been there but usually you can see the beach in the Rooster cam if it's there. I'm sure you could find a place to launch if you were willing to slog through some marshland and search a bit but you will most likely be alone (I'd guess) unless you take someone with you.

No beach at all available by foot, regardless of how much slogging you do. Very Happy

Was just there on Monday. The water level was part way up the stairs. Zero beach, and I even road over to the trees by the normal beach and couldn't touch the bottom.
I had drove 10 hours and just bought a new kite and was the only day it was windy. So I went, but kinda sketchy. Launched in the parking lot West of the ranger station and walked down the stairs. I would advise extreme caution to all and unless you're super jonesin to go out, I would hold off.

No, no no no no... Good way to end up dead. Way too many gusts, swirls, lulls, rotors, etc up and down the stairs. If you're going to launch there under these conditions, rig in the parking lot, walk down the stairs and drift launch. Still very sketchy even then. I'd say even after that, maybe just get the kite up on an edge and body drag out to the end of the pilings before getting the kite up in the air.

If the wind fills in to the west, there's a beach by PDX on Marine drive. It's just on the east side of the big parking lot with the boat ramp. Otherwise, head east to Stevenson. The CGKA is working to open another option as well.

That does sound sketchy, I'm gonna have someone hold the kite at the bottom of the stairs while I swim out then launch me, can't be any worse than Stevie.

Umm, yes it can. Good idea about swimming out though. Rather than being launched though, consider having the launcher just drift launch you. Of course, if you're not experienced with drift launches, if you mess it up you're heading west at a pretty quick clip...

The forecast is for it to fill in at PDX possibly this afternoon and then both sat and sun. With the heat though, may be a lot of people at that beach this weekend.

Yes there is! And always better to have more people. The launch is at the west end of sand island. Big beach for rigging 2 or 3 kites at a time. If you go down though and drift west of the island, there is no way back to it. Somebody has to go get you.

I rig in the wind shadow and then walk out the north side of the beach to launch. Bear upwind immediately so if you have a problem you have a shot at getting back to the beach without a pick up.
