Hey guys,

My girlfriend and I are flying out to Oregon tomorrow to check out the state and see if we want to move out there. We're going to be camping for most of the trip and checking out the Gorge, Portland and Coast for the week. I know it's not the windy season but if you guys see anything worth while from the 12-18th let me know.

Also, if you have any recommendations for places to hike, bike, camp, climb, surf, SUP, eat, drink, visit, etc. feel free to hit us up. Any local advice is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Ryan

You might head straight to the coast first if you want to kite out here. Little rainy and wind from the south but should be kiteable Thursday afternoon. Small swell but should be fun. Not forecasting real solid for the mid and later part of your trip for the coast.
Drive to Seaside on hwy 26, pm me if you want some heads up. Good camping and hiking too.

Thanks guys! Yeah that trip was unbelievable.

WINDUDE - I'm from Milwaukee but kite all over Michigan. I go to Sheboygan regularly and on occasion up to Door County.

Jake,
Hopefully something will happen. If not, no biggie. I'm just stoked to check out the North West.

as a fellow midwest transplant...get the heck outta there! Midwest sucks, Oregon rules....but...
Lived in PDX for 10 years when I moved out here...winters suck!
It will rain 30+ days in a row. You wont see the sun for like 4 months...you will want to shoot yourself. I dont know how I lasted as long as I did before moving to the dry side of the cascades. Only way I lasted that long was I had a season pass to Meadows and went and played in the snow all the time.
I would look in central oregon or the east (dry'r) end of the gorge...harder to find a job though!

From Temira:

For the Gorge wind forecast, we’ll have westerlies at 15-18 near Hood River today with 23-26 out in the desert this afternoon. Tomorrow brings gusty 15-18, as an upper level low sits off the coast. Friday looks light, with westerlies starting to build late in the day. Saturday looks like a weak version of classic Gorge, so call it 23-26 east of the cloud line with gusty 15-18 under the clouds. Strongest and steadiest wind will probably be at Doug’s/Maryhill on Saturday. The Columbia is currently at 314,000cfs, meaning Rufus/Maryhill/The Wall are probably going to be washed out. The Columbia is currently 45 degrees.

Tawas is one of the few places I have haven't been. I've heard great things about it though. Warm conditions, great wind. From what I recall it's predominately thermal driven. I think it's more consistent wind and calm shallow water.

Make the move. I am rare Oregon native. When I was growing up it was always Californians moving up here seeking lower prices. But the past three years every single new transplant has been from the Midwest. I hear a common mantra. "If I am going to be unemployed in the Minnesota I might as well be unemployed out here!"

True dat!

Each person has been giddy with joy especially about the milder winters.

How do deal with the rain! Immediately get into white water kayaking which is a rain driven activity. Epic out here with 100+ runs within an hour of Portland. I guess our pray for rain party didn't work this year because we didn't get enough rain - bummer...

Yea I wondered how it was up there, thanks for your input. I used to go up there as a kid and it was so boring, if only kiting was going on back then. I guess they have a kite camp out there. If I am ever back in the mitten in the summer I plan on going up.
