How is this spot for a beginner? I have about 8 hrs of lessons under my belt and have been told it's just water time now. I have a feeling kite beach Maui where I took my lessons will be a little warmer than this. I have the gear to keep me warm, just looking to get on the water.
Cheers! |

Stevenson is not really a beginner friendly spot. It has a tricky, rocky launch with flukey wind. The landing is not much better. You also need to be able to stay upwind or at least hold your position. There is only one entry and exit point. There is no beach to walk along. |

Think of Stevenson like an aircraft carrier. . . One either lands or launches one at a time. Not a beginners' spot due to rocks, wind shaddow (lulls and gusts) at land and launch site. One must commit when either landing or launching--being timid or half-ass will get you hurt and or f-up the lineup.
With 8 hrs of water time your looking for shallow waters with downwind exits; a rare commodity in Spring and early summer on the Columbia unless your talking about Sauvies Island and or Jones Beach or having a jet ski/boat taking you to a shallow spot far away from the common launch spots. |

Agreed...downwind exits are a PLUS From what I understand, Suavies doesn't start blowing for a few months.....how does Jones do this time of year? It seems like the Jones wind sensor is messed up.....it's always reading zero. At least, I hope it's screwed up. |

It blows this time of year. Jones was going on Saturday, but I am not sure if anyone was out there. That is the main problem with early season Jones are lots of fisherman crowding the banks and very few kiters. If you can make sure some other kiters are out there with you - Jones would work well. |

Three of us were out there Saturday on 12's and 13's. Nice Steady wind from 3:30 to 6:30. It felt almost like summer. |

Nice! I almost went to Jones - but headed to event site instead. I was worried I would have been the only one at Jones. How was the current? |

I just started getting comfortable this winter up-winding. It was cake on Saturday. About two to four good lofts then upwind one pass. Start the cycle over. Really it was a nice day. |
