Yeah, I have a 6m already.

I am thinking of friends and family that have shown some interest, mostly, not so much for me at this point. My brothers youngest boy is in first grade and he already rides dirt bikes and snowboards like a little badass, it would be cool to see what he could do with a kite.

Plus I would have the hookup for those 50+ knot days Wink

IMHO, a teeny, tiny, 4 line trainer would not be worth it in your case. It'll be useless to you too quickly. Spend that money on another lesson. A 4.5m to 6m kite is a good step up from a trainer when you can handle it safely. It'll allow you to body drag and fly it on the edge of the water (above conditions) with less intimidation than a bigger kite. (Assuming light winds.) And later on, it'll be a great high wind kite for you.

+1 for Nak. My wifes 4.5M RPM is my trainer kite for friends and family....and my high wind option. Every new kiter should have a small 4-line kite for practice. Trainer kites are good for about 1 hour to understand the wind window.

Light wind practice is essential. If you cannot fly your 6M confidently with ease on the land with no problems you're not ready for the water IMO because once you drop the kite you won't know how to relaunch....or if the wind picks up you'll unknowingly send it and then it's rag doll time under water. Light wind is very difficult to fly clean in so it's good practice for managing lulls, line slack, pivoting on the edge of the window etc. So many people waste valuable lesson time because they don't know how to fly the kite beforehand so if anybody is reading this that is thinking about taking lessons....a $200 trainer kite gives you false confidence and is nothing like a 4-line kite. Borrow a trainer and spend $300 on an old used 5M Rev or Waroo you can beat the shit out with a harness while giving you the MUCH needed sheeting knowledge. Obviously you need to fly in a safe area, with a knowledgeable kiter buddy like DeKrep around to help AND absolutely take lessons because you still need massive time understanding self-rescue, body dragging etc...etc...etc....but at least throw your instructors a bone and do some pre-prep on how to fly. You'll progress quicker, have way more fun and feel stoked to stick it out because this sport can frustrate the hell out you, which can be mostly avoided if you know how to keep the kite in the air while you fumble around trying to figure out how to get your board on. Wink

The bonus is the ground lesson $$$ you save makes any additional up front equipment cost a moot point or at least pays for your buddies beer who is patiently relaunching you when your sheeting in and out like a monkey 'effin a football all day long.
