Would you buy the same kite you have now if it only came in black or grey? Most probably not. Thats why whenever a new kite line or year is launced all we do is bitch about the graphics first, then we talk performance.
|
Are you kidding? Typically I don't even know or care what color kites I've bought until I pull one out of the bag to pump it up. Florida must be a very different place where style is more important than function? |
HaHa
Hating on Florida now are ya. Let me take a piece of pie from your home town. Ruben is matching awfully well in this video dont you think?

Fashion is part of the kiting scene wether you like it (or agree with it) or not. The big brim baseball caps. The jersey hanging over the harness. The long board shorts (with or without wetsuit). If your saying that there is no influence with what you wear or how your kite looks with what you wear then..............
Send an email to your own kite company and ask how much budget is invested in their graphics department. Point is, the board shorts thing has nothing to do with hiding your junk or not (or does it??) so its most lielly a fashion thing.
And yes I agree this thread ranks up their with why are pump bases flat......

Basically, Phil's trying to say that if you ride with style you should wear them.

Great idea! Will those kilts have pockets to place a pair of gloves and or a sea spec glasses?...sometimes I have to take off my glasses as they fog up due to the temperature differential of ocean water to air temp. Not going to use a pair of croakies to keep the glasses around my neck when they get fogged up as I have lost numerous pair this way getting munched in the waves.
Until the chaps or kilt come out w/a pocket, I'll stick with board shorts, but I'll be sure to check the racks of Cleanline, 2nd Wind, and Gorge Preformance next time I'm in one of these awesome stores.

The important thing is that board shorts should always be "Coast Guard Approved".... cuz if they ain't "Coast Guard Approved", they should be banned and a $300 penalty + imprisonment of up to 50 years should always apply.

I don't like wearing them! Sometimes they sag, and then it restricts the motion of my legs. Also, it makes swimming and body dragging harder (more drag).
Funny, you go up to the hatch and you'll never see a windsurfer wearing board shorts.
I don't care if people see the knuckle. It's just a bunch of dudes anyway, who cares. Why is everyone so self conscious about it. One guy said he wore shorts to protect his wetsuit from the sand. What a bunch of BS. I've never seen anyone dragging around in the sand.

No way. Just one more thing to get snagged up in when *^$# hits the fan, slow you down if you have to swim and make body dragging upwind slower and less effective.

Yes! As long as it's ALL black or ALL grey. Kite makers, if you can't find a dye that sticks, please give us some mono-chromatic options. Here in the wet NW, the color bleed is killing our resale value!
Rant over...back to boardshorts...

This is the greatest kite controversy of all time!!
I can't help to return to my surf roots since it was surfers that invented and developed wetsuits for boardsports long before kiteboarding came around. If you were found surfing at any number of spots around the world wearing boardshorts over your wetsuit, then the consequences would range from verbal humiliation at the low end to an outright beatdown at the high end. When I talk to many of my nonkiter surf friends, most will make some derogatory remark as to why many kiters look like rodeo clowns in the surf with their boardshorts over their wetsuits.
As I said before it is a bad fashion statement that will eventually fad away, just give it time.

Here's a picture from an early 60's surf contest at Cannon. It appears regardless of deciding to even wear a wetsuit, the boardshorts were a requirement. Times change though and they must have decided boardshorts over the wetsuit was not cool or that one guy hit a hot tub time machine and is actually a kiter.
