Thanks for your inputs and help. I will not be playing with any kite around people or hood river’s beginners.
I do not plan on flying a 10m on land with wind conditions more than 10mph. I just want to get use to flying it one handed and use to the bar system with a mountain board or on skis. I have a bar for my foil but I can’t fly it one handed in any kind of wind since there is no line attached to my waste and any wind speeds above 15 yank me around like a ragdoll.
I have the progression DVDs and have watched a few others. I am not skipping on lessons, I just plan on spending around a grand on a kite/setup so I’m not buying 2 for now. Military get 40% off most 2012 OR products and I don’t think another company can compete with that for the quality of product. (Well I am assuming they have good products since they have been in business almost 10 years, with great consumer reviews.)
Should I get a OR razor, Freeride, cypher or should I just get the 17.5m flight and just practice by paragliding the huge thing to work. All 3 are around 750 for a 10M. I want to go with the Rise since it has a larger wind range. From the information I found it looks like this
Rise = Effortless freeride (easiest to fly), easy & big jumping, gusty conditions, better beginner kite
Razor = Smoothest looping, surf, unhooked, aggressive steering, best going upwind, more glide during big air
Cypher = Unhooked, wake- & park style riding, freestyle

And which bar would you go with? (I’m thinking Freeride)

I have a few friends that will be getting in to kite boarding as well. I’m trying to get us a good beginner setup so they can try what I get and make informed decisions on their purchases. thanks

If you read your own post you will realize you don't really know what you want out of a kite yet , normal as your a beginner , Other than the fact of the discount , which is a good thing .
Thank you for your service commitment !
You won't likely regret buying OR as there are many that use these kites . Buying new is the best thing you have decided . Not skimping on lessons is a great idea , even better than the new kite .
Once your up and riding you will figure out what you like and make changes to your equipment as needed .
Take the lesson first , then buy the size you and your instructor have found to be right for you .
Several good facts mentioned . I would say you have answered your own question about flying the full size kite on land ( as a beginner ) . You mention in10mph , great . The concern by others is when the kite gets away from you and kicks your ass . You stated yourself the 4m can " yank me around like a rag doll "
Again we all have a thought or more for you but those lessons will clear up sooooo much for you by personal experience which cannot be outdone . I saw most beginners ( even though taught not to ) make mistakes that cause the kite to fly across the window and back when oversteered they don't let go of the bar until learned to , this could be very painful on land .
You may be surprised at what helpful ( no lesson plan , non instructor ) kiters may have forgotten to tell you or neglected to get you to practice to retain the muscle memory .......
So many choices .
Enjoy and be careful because , kiting will ruin your life Very Happy

PS ,
Don't go to Maui cause that beach Sucks !, it's always so windy Rolling Eyes

I think the general tone on here is the way to go: get some lessons, then buy some stuff. Having some time flying the kite(ANY kite) is going to tell you way more about what YOU like in a kite than any of us telling you what WE think you should get.

Besides, your going to get more hang of flying the kite in the first 5 minutes of your first lesson on the water with the real deal than 20 hours of flying a 10m kite on the beach. Even though your stoked to get into the sport, put that stoke into getting some lessons sooner than later, it will be the best use of your time and energy.

It just takes one whoops to get into hot water with the kite on the beach. That whoops could also impose restrictions on the beach for the rest of us trying to kite there. Please keep yourself safe and take a lesson, and don't take the extra risk of closing a beach or limiting access in the process of starting the sport.
