as someone who is relatively new to the sport they are saying that you are just riding the flat water and not boosting, jumping etc. Just cruising around and making transitions.

Guys who ride the coast consider anything without waves to by "mowing the lawn". Don't forget your JohnDeere hat and can coozie.

Mowing the lawn means to shave off your pubic hair. The saying started at rooster rock. It used to get too windy to kite, so guys would trim their pubes in the bushes waiting for the wind to die down.

There actually is a tattoo stickman lawnmowing ...hair down there - but I won't post it. You will have to look it up yourself.
But to answer the original question, even though I've been insulted so many times here and take the risk for more pelting insults - Yes: Lawnmowing is going back & forth, doing transitions in all types of conditions...flat, chop, waves & rollers. Personally, I love lawnmowing large rollers...so fun!!!!

quenyaistar, "mowing the lawn" is how you'll be putting your time in on the board once you're able to stay upwind. For us beginners, its just going back-and-forth getting comfortable on the board, but even more experienced riders like Melokitegirl enjoy "just cruzin" at times... after all, not every session as to be "balls to the wall" (MonkeyBoy, just let it go, ok?).
Context is everything... if you come in and someone says... "you're just mowing the lawn" then, ya, they're saying you're just going back-and-forth... boring... (to them, maybe not to you, so who cares?).
If you're out at a place that has big swell (hopefully not too soon) and some guy goes by, yelling "dude, quit mowing the lawn!!" then what they are getting at is that they are trying to ride and turn on the swell, you're just going in a straight line; you're not turning and riding the swell like they might expect you to.
Its actually more of term from windsurfing. I've sailed really big conditions at Swell City, especially last spring with the flooding & epic swell days. Yes, if someone goes out there and just starts "mowing the lawn" it makes it harder for everyone else who's trying to ride the swell. Personally, I've never bitched about it because I figure regardless of the conditions, you should be able to ride how you want to. But that's the context that you might hear it in.
Here's a i-phone pic of me at Rufus last month "mowing the lawn"... I had a great time.

Haha...LOVE this thread!! I don't personally care if you're mowing the lawn or jumping the lawn, as long as you're out there scoring whatever session you can!!
