Tue Dec 06, 11 12:05 pm Shark Attack at Seaside Today. |
|
|
Just saw it on Ch 8 news. A women was attacked while surfing. Other surfers got her to shore; she's in the hospital. That's all they have for details. I'm hoping the injuries aren't to severe.
Is it just me, or have the landlords been pretty aggressive this year?

Yup - Have to agree w/ that. Don't personally understand 'the earth belongs to me' ideology. We are of this earth, just as all the other animals that inhabit it. If you can't deal with it, stay out of the ocean.

I was thinking the same thing. I still think about your encounter when the seals are acting weird..

That poor Rusty surfboard... That was obviously not a white shark attack. I just spent 3 hours alone in the Cove, Monday after thanksgiving. I saw birds, dolphins, and seals. I'm sure there were also sharks.
This is nothing to freak out about. We all do dangerous, stupid shit, for fun, all the time. The risk is worth the reward.

Disagree.
If there was a grizzly up at timberline picking off snowboarders, it would be dealt with right away. I don't see much difference. I don't want to co-exist with things that will eat me.
And as for the beauty and majesty of sharks, tuna are also beautiful and amazing fish, but we're driving them to extinction and there's not much noise being made about leaving them alone. I'm way more inclined to protect tuna than sharks. I'd like to see prohibitions against eating tuna for a while, and 6-pack cans of shark at Costco. Maybe tuna should start attacking people to gain protection?
Maybe If I'd had one of these to play with as a kid I'd be more open to the idea of being eaten.

Keep in mind this simple fact: We have a better chance of dying in a car wreck on our way to go surf than actually getting bitten by a shark.
Now please excuse me while I drive drunk and smoke cigarettes whilst eating fatty foods and talking on my cell phone. All the while knowing that I am genetically at-risk for high blood pressure and heart disease. Please pass the salt....

Come on man, don't you watch shark week? The number of fish in the ocean is directly correlated to the number of apex predators. The less huge fish to eat pinnipeds, as well as other predatory fish, the more OUR food fish are impacted. As far as Grizzlies at Timberline, not since the early 1900's. And I am sure if a problem shark was repeatedly attacking, it would be eliminated.
White sharks are endangered and deserve to be protected. I know they are scary, and I have 3 close friends who have been attacked(one right next to me), but we are in THEIR milieu. Anyone who would not be honored to be bitten by a Great White, in my opinion, does not deserve to enter the ocean.

She is in Portland now getting reconstructive surgery on her lower leg. It is pretty mangled but below the knee so hopefully she will retain good use. She's pissed she won't be surfing for two months and her wetsuit and board are ruined!

I like sharks, grizzle bears, wolves, tigers, lions and the whole apex predator crew. I just wish there was more of them.
Bummer to hear about the attack at Seaside, but that is a possible reality when sharing the ocean with an apex predator.

So it's more serious than originally thought. I hope she'll be able to surf again without any problems.
