Wow! I really don't like getting into it on forums but this DownStream guy (Brett Newcomb) is a total dick on this topic here. I mainly Don't comment on such forums mostly because of these Donkey looking & acting character yes you BRETT. So much time and effort has gone into this gear review and this is the thanks we get.

Maybe when the SPI Round Up comes up this year we might be honest in our mag and let everyone know what a joke the event is and and how unorganized Brett puts it together, or how Brett and Air Padre make so much profit off of it and give nothing back to the community...?

Brett not sure if your upset that the review wasn't about whatever shitty ass gear your on this year or if your just mad that they didn't mention that shit hole shop you work at (Air Padre) You and your half ass lessons are not going to go far as you keep putting down well respected people who do a lot for the sport and their community. Keep it up and Air Padre will soon be out of business!!! I know I will no longer refer new kiters to you or Air Padre anymore.

That's all I'm going to say on this topic as I have a real job and don't have time to come commit hours of hate like Brett here and go back and forth.

I sure hope all NW kiteboarders don't act and think like your fellow Forum guy DownStream (Brett Newcomb)

ahhh yes, getting spicy now

im not kiting RR in this weather, btw, im on SPI

heres the thing, and i dont xpect this to last much longer on the forum, so to re-focus on the points:

1) i wrote that i think the gear reviews are not shams. i dont think they are dictated by ad dollars, i think the mags are genuinely trying to explain the gears attributes. (and i also appreciate the opinion comments of the riders involved in the tests as well, in case that wasnt mentioned)

2) i AM taking an issue with what i think is a misdirection of the kiting public, through some lingering ambiguities that i think can be cleared up. and people talking about it on this forum is how the change can start.

a) my main problem is lumping turning ability and speed together.

--why is this still like this? i know people talk this way about kites all the time. im saying think about it, and maybe you will agree that these things aren't actually as related as they are currently being treated (and have been for some time). maybe by talking about it this current "norm" can be broken among people that know, which will lead to the magazines propogating a new type of thinking to the masses, which will lead to less ambiguous discussions on the beach about kite characteristics.

thanks for the personal digs btw

Actually, Brett is a fellow forum guy and also a former Gorge-local, so he gets a little latitude even if he comes across as a dickhead sometimes Wink

But, in actuality he was not really being a dickhead by sharing an opinion on a forum that is available for people to do such a thing, as well as provide a counter opinion, such as I did, and then another opposite counter opinion, such as what Wakeup commented on my additional comments. We're all actually friends, and it's okay as long as the line isn't crossed into making things personal.

Just thought I'd throw it out there that the forum (especially in the winter time) does tolerate a certain level of smack talking, but we all leave it here when we head down to the beach to kite.

really? 600+ views and nobody is gonna venture an opinion on the actual topic here?

i know some of you are thinking about the relationship of speed and manueverability.

heres what i think about it:

speed and manueverability (tuning ability and handling feel) are different things. a kite can be fast, but not manueverable, or slow and highly manueverable, or any combination as well in different degrees.

i'm pushing this because i truelly believe it is a better way to think and talk about kites. im not even saying im exactly or 100% right, but i would like to know what other people are thinking about that topic.

many brands are already decribing their gear more in this way, and i think its a turn in a better direction, and could lead to a better future for the sport and its currently largely somewhat confused (and confusing) following.

think about it. and describe some differences between speed and steering. i think some of you can

been on this forum a long time and have had wordy posts too. that is damaging sometimes. this post probably could have had a much different result if it started like downstream's last post,

"i know some of you are thinking about the relationship of speed and manueverability.

if the kite mag reviews were to be mentioned, I guess that is ok but not really the point of the topic imo. just a thought but inevitably, even if you tried to preface that you weren't being critical, by calling out an editor by name people will infer that you disapprove. even though you don't.

I agree though, I like your assessment of speed and maneuverability. also agree with wakeup on terms like 'grunt'. they get use so much that the true meaning gets lost on the community, especially those new to kiting. I thought grunt was the noise when you deflate your kite J, damn!

ya ok, test the waters, not bad, thank you....

but why dont you just describe a difference or two that i know you know regarding a kite that is highly manueverable vs one that is not. or between a kite that you know is fast and one thats not.

i dont think there is anything wrong with a kite being fast or slow, manueverable or not, btw, different gear for different reasons, just like everything else.

ya, wordy post for sure, but gotta stir the pot sometimes (i mean look at the views)

((and i dont think the testers or editor are gonna be offended by this, i watched both my friends lindsey and blaine learn how to kiteboarding a long time ago, and am stoked to see how good they are now (and they are) and that they had this great opportunity and were willing to dedicated their time to a gear review. as for the magazine, i think they will understand this is for their benefit in the future))

no ... . .. body . . ............ cares .. .. . .. .. ... ...... . .

fine. fuck it.

i consider this thread a success tho, just so y'all know. anyone that reads it is gonna be thinking about how there really is no correlation between things being fast and turny (even if some are both) and that was the goal, whether anyone wants to talk about it or not.
