Thanks for the advice sasquatch, I will heed it. I agree I probably wont be kiting on my own much this winter, but I would like to get the lesson thing out of the way so I am considering KitePaddleSurf in Bellingham. Three 3 hour lesson package in knee deep water, they supply all the gear including dry suit. Or I fly down to La ventana, bring my sleeping bag and do it on the cheap.
I also plan on practicing with a long board and my trainer kite a lot, looks like it might be windy at Illwaco tomorrow, might head to Long Beach and fly my trainer tomorrow.
I have read about enough people losing expensive boards on here that I plan on not riding alone. |

Come check us out in Bellingham. Just as Jim said, it's one if the best places to learn in the NW and we have been teaching at this spot year round for many years. The water in the puget sound does not get as cold as the rivers so we can ride year round with the fall and spring being the windiest. Tons of space, flat sandy bottom, smooth water and jetski support from experienced instructors with all gear provided, you really can't go wrong. Unless you want to fly to a destination such as south padre, or hattaras.
If you live in the Nw Riding with 3mm gloves is not a big deal! |

Full gloves/mitts do not let you grip the bar/boom properly esp. 3 mm and above.
So the solution is to find open palm mitts/gloves which have an open section
cut out only on the area where your palms grip the bar. Not sure if they make them anymore. Neil Pryde used to make them, not sure if they still do |

I have some 2mm that work most of the time. But I'm talking about the really cold days where I'm the only one on the Columbia. (That I've seen anyway.) Below freezing temps and 35 degree water. The open palms are a good idea, but they don't work for me. What always ends up driving me off the water in the winter is my hands... I keep hoping for a high tech solution, but haven't seen it yet. Once you saw the Atan booties, you'd understand what I'm looking for. The Atan 3mm booties feel like 1mm neoprene--but are warmer than 5mm neoprene--and would make excellent gloves. With something like that I could extend my 45 minute winter sessions to several hours. Or at least till my lines started icing up, I've had that problem too! |
