Around my parts, it is fairly common (maybe Im just lucky) to run over a big Tiger shark. I usually cruise over at least 2 or 3 during the season. Thats just Tigers, I usually see plenty of others. |
Thats weird. Tigers are deep water guys and Bulls are in shallow waters.
Anyways, Bull sharks are what I have seen in FL.
Jumped over a 12 footer without knowing until I looked down below..........

Please tell that to the Tiger. I want him to stay in deep water. It isnt uncommon for them to come to shallow waters. I have seen them in about 20 feet of water not far from the reefs and also have seen a few fairly close to shore in grassy bottom, but more so in the first scenario.
Their markings are fairly recognizable so I am pretty certain I am seeing Tigers. I do agree that Bulls are much more common.....but that doesn't make me feel any better LOL. It alos sucks when a big bull comes up on you in a Kayak. I dont know what freaks me out more...seeing them in the yak or kitesurfing over them. Although it makes me a little nervous, I do agree with the others that you just gotta do your thing and co-exist.

I've never heard anything about the color white and sharks, but I do remember that sharks really like yellow from shark week. I think the only coincidence there is that most surfboards are white.

Yellow? Great. I've been painting the bottom of my boards yellow for visibility. I didn't realize most of the boards in OR were white. In HI it seemed like most of the boards weren't, At least at the spots I went to...

So signs are up at South Beach but was still surprised that nobody but me took advantage of the steady wind and sweet surf yesterday. Are white's territorial? Seems to me , the odds of another encounter there are about the same as anywhere else.
I've got to admit though, It was a little sketchy the couple of times I went down outside.

like a lot of things in life if you think about it enough it will happen
they are there all the time, just a lot more surfers this time of year
because the surf is so damn good/great (this time of year)
and it really helps your body dragging skills

Don't you feel like a hero when you really go for it though? Don't waste wave sessions being conservative just cause you're scared of the body drag!

Forget sharks, how about whales?
Haven't been kiting in a while, but the last time I was in flo it was calm and flat and I SUPed out to the mouth. Half dozen greys breaching and blowing right there off the rocks, 20-30 feet away.
At least I think they were greys, I don't know whales, but they had the ridge backs, which I think is grey whales.
Didn't look very big by whale standards. Big enough to give me the shakes. I just laid down on the board and cried out "I'm sorry Wilson!" as I drifted in.

Intersting recount of the Oct. 2010 fatality at Surf Beach, Santa Barbara @ surfline this week :
http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/shark-attack-witness-shares-story_61442/
Story gave me the chills.
I don't know if it's the way the water looks, or the way the wildlife is acting, or just my level of paranoia on a particular day - But, some days just feel sharkier than others ..

At least he moved south and you weren't talking about me this way today.
We went out at the cove and had a nice day. Sunny, waves and warm. Going again this weekend and while it doesn't look like sun, it will still be nice to be on the water.

If you get killed by a shark, at least you died doing something you love and went out in a way that will always be remembered. Wish I had some quotes handy from "300", haha!
I used to be so scared in the ocean, then I spent 6 hours a day in it for three months straight... Complete desensitization! |

I disagree with the whole "co-exist" thing. I want to use the ocean and I don't want to be eaten or even take a small chance of being eaten.
If it was a damn lion roaming the beaches, we wouldn't think about co-existing with it. If a grizzly was hanging out picking off folks, we'd deal with it. If it was some psycho human wandering around trying to wrap bear traps around surfers, we'd put a stop to them damn quick. How long would we let a hungry pack of wolves co-exist with us while night skiing at meadows? Why do sharks get a free ride?
Screw sharks near shore. Until they quit trying to eat us, I'm all for eating lots of shark sandwiches, the other white meat.

I think we should reintroduce all the predators back into the game. There are way too many stupid people in the world now, I think the scales just got tipped over 7 billion. Survival of the fittest and natural selection worked for millions of years till humans screwed it up. Wolves and grizzles should be roaming the local hills if I could make the rules!!
By the way, I like White Sharks at our local beaches, it helps to keep the crowds down. Also, just got thru kitesurfing South Beach after work this afternoon, by myself, looked like a ghost town. Would have been nice to have a few others to kite with out there, but at least I had sharks to keep me company, and keep me honest!!
