Arrrggg! Don't remind me. I have found the locals to be pretty nice actually. Then again, I stay pretty far away from them too. Think I would like to do the same with the Landlord.

Look at it this way... It's so rare, and now that it's happen you can just play the odds. Statistically, it just won't happen again. Go surf, have fun, and don't worry about it.

Still sharky out there...

And the dope on Barfly's Shark Rider

Seaside, OR  — On October 10, 2011 Doug Niblack was surfing ‘The Cove' at Seaside, Oregon. It was 3:00 PM and he had been on the water about 2 hours. Air and water temperatures were estimated in the low 50s and 60s Fahrenheit, respectively. It was raining and the sky was overcast with an onshore breeze of 5 – 10 mph. There was a 6 foot swell at about 16 seconds over a sandy ocean floor 10 – 12 feet deep. Water visibility was 5 – 10 feet with a ‘red tide' present. A deep water channel was 40 – 50 feet from his location. Salmon are currently present in the area and one pinniped was observed 5 – 10 minutes following the attack. Although there had been up to 15 surfers in the water, all but two had gone ashore prior to the attack. Niblack reported the following; “I was sitting on my board, legs astraddle, for 5 - 10 minutes. I paddled over to another location near the point break and sat up. The other surfers were about 20 yards from me and closer to the beach. It seemed like my board was struck from below or hit something, very forceful. It tossed me up in the air and I landed on my knees on what at first I thought was a rock. I stood up and then saw a dorsal fin, about 2 feet high, in front of me (facing the tail)and then a tail, about 8 – 10 feet behind the dorsal fin. The tail began moving from side to side as the shark moved away. It was then that I realized I was on the back of a shark. I jumped off to my left side. The shark started moving away but struck my surfboard with its dorsal fin and apparently hooked my leash as I began to be pulled thru the water, along with my board. I traveled about 10 feet, when the leash went slack. I got on my surfboard and went directly to the beach. Jake Marks had witnessed the entire incident and joined me in my quick ride to the beach. The shark's coloration was a very dark charcoal grey to black.” The causal species of this attack is a White Shark, 16 – 18 feet in length, based on coloration and size estimates provided by the victim. This is the fourth confirmed unprovoked shark attack for 2011 from the Pacific Coast of North America. Please report any shark sighting, encounter, or attack to the Shark Research Committee.

Yeah but isn't it like flipping a coin. The odds reset every time you do it. If you're on land, your odds are 0 of a shark encounter. It can only happen when you put yourself in the environment of the shark. So........everytime you enter the water the odds are reset and the same wether or not you have already payed rent. or?

Around my parts, it is fairly common (maybe Im just lucky) to run over a big Tiger shark. I usually cruise over at least 2 or 3 during the season. Thats just Tigers, I usually see plenty of others. I don't know what would happen if you were to crash when you are right next to a Tiger. Could spook em, could provoke. Either way I dont want to find out.

Just sayin....

There are no such thing as sharks. Except for the one that just got a board at South Jetty in Newport in that day or two! Sharktober! Just had two glorious days in the water on Monday/Tuesday, about 5 hours each, didn't see a single piece of sea life.

This is what went down at South Beach today, and what is left of Bobby's board. Amazing that Bobby came away unhurt from this kind of a chomp!!

I am glad to see everyone is ok and we had not injuries.

Booby - I would hang that board on the wall and buy a powerball ticket - your odds are very good right now.

For the Sharks - I hope all these spottings and encounters do not spur any kind of retaliation on the sharks. As the krazedkiter mentions, they are all over out there, we just don't see them. These guys were just curious.

http://www.koinlocal6.com/mostpopular/story/Surfer-survives-shark-attack-near-Newport/wFghdXNN7kWmyFlRr9vz8A.cspx

A man surfing south of Newport is alive after surviving an alleged shark attack Thursday.

Bobby Gumm of Newport was surfing with three friends about 200 yards off the coast at South Beach State Park when witnesses say was suddenly thrown approximately 10-feet into the air.

Ronald and Carol Clifford of Waldport were with Gumm when the attack occurred.

"He said he just got done surfing. He said he went up to sit down. He felt a bump on his leg, and noticed it was a shark. And that's when he called for help," Ronald Clifford said.

Clifford, a local surfing instructor, says he saw a 2-foot fin come out of the water.

“I wanted to go help him, but it was a frenzy, so I just decided (sic) we just paddled in,” Clifford said.

Clifford says that as the group frantically paddled, they turned, and saw that Gumm was coming in to shore as well. When they all arrived back on the beach, Gumm, visibly shaken, showed them a 23-inch chunk the shark had taken out of the surfboard.

Clifford, originally from Huntington Beach, California, says he has been surfing at South Beach for six years.

“It is known for sharks… We’re out in their ocean. Usually (we) don’t bother them, they don’t bother us. But today, we all felt something out there,” Clifford said.

HHAh! Funny to have to eat my words. Oh well, I'm not worried, the rest of you can worry your little hearts out. If you get killed by a shark, at least you died doing something you love and went out in a way that will always be remembered. Wish I had some quotes handy from "300", haha!

I used to be so scared in the ocean, then I spent 6 hours a day in it for three months straight... Complete desensitization!

Is it a coincidence that both boards are white? Just wondering if a white board with legs hanging over the side looks more like a seal from below.
