This is classic government horseshit. Fixing somehting that ain't broken. The Spit is a perfect name because that's what it is; a sand spit. The Spit will always be The Spit or The Sandbar no matter what you try and call it.
But as long as some fools are taking sugestions, how about these:

This is so perfect. I endlessly listen (and read here) to people complain complain complain about the sandbar when it's really not that bad. Just STFU, get your kite in the air and get the hell out there. It's called access.
