I have a friend who lives in that area, right next to the Lewis river. He has an proffesional R/C race track in his front yard- pretty damn cool actually. Everytime I'm out there it is windy. Maybe i'll ask him to set up a wind sensor, the guy is loaded.

Tucker glad to see your mom droped you off somewhere other than sauvies!!!

Humm, i thought i posted a reply already, but it must not have posted. Long and short, you don't want to kite here, bad things will happen, the meth head rednecks are a pain in the ass. Slash your tires and cut you kite lines. One guy has his kite run over by a motobike!

Or ideally you drive to the end of Dike Rd. and do a downwinder from their to Tucker's beach... Probably about 2-3 miles or so. Hit every wing dam on the way down.

that sounds like the way to do it!

mike whats the deal? its good riding, and dirtbikes and atvs have been banned. if you even see one call the cops. the hick factor was still not as bad as jones. i mean if you piss them off im sure they will screw your stuff up just like at any other spot not exclusivly populated by kiters.

anybody who's concerned about the secrecy of the spot probably hasn't even been there, because once you go its immediately clear that there are more launch options and beach space available along that road than the entire Columbia Gorge.

Any body that has kited there more than once knows that if there is any wind from the west it sucks. Also anyone who has kited there has figured out how to forcast and has found other wind sensors in the area. yes there is pleanty of beach, (thanks to those who cleaned it up this year)other launches upwind and even an rv park where you can kite from if you are a guest.

The reason it would be nice to keep this spot a secret is so all you kiters don't get it shut down like the old secrect spot! The ones that do kite there keep it a secret, ie thats why you all think this is some ground shaking revalation. We Washingtonians figured you PDX'ers could have your SI and we would quitely ride WW.

I guess now we all have to call it Truckers beach and like i am sure he invented post it notes and paperclips

WHATEVER Rolling Eyes

PS the other side of the river is ST helens

The deal is that you don;t give it up like a school girl on her prom date...ya dig. Maybe you don't, maybe you haven't had a school girl give it up yet? PS i hape you gave your mom gas monsy for driving you there.

Mike...get over it...

Plenty of us have kited out here and shared it with lots of others. There is an entire Seattle contingent who know all about this area as they drive right past it on the way to Hood River. This general area has been discussed before on the forums, and is NO SECRET... No worries about getting any of these spots shut down as there is plenty of parking, it is not on the shoulder of a major highway, and there are no train tracks to cross... Any comparison in terms of access to Secret Spot is not relevant. Shoot, being that I am a Hoodite maybe I should just ask you Washingtonians to just please stay at home up north. But in reality the wind and water is for everyone, and so far this year the crowds have been down if anything.

It terms of forecasting folks... its easy... Hot in Portland, Gorge Dead, with Northwest to Northeast flow. The Scappose sensor is a great tool and look for it to be around 9-10 with a more northerly reading for cleaner wind. When Sauvies works, so does this stretch of the river. Maybe the more kiters we can get out there, the more clean up work that will get done.

The ATVs, dirt bikes etc have been banned for years but that doesn't stop them. A Dirt bike and an ATV ridden by drunk red necks rode through my lines as i was setting up to launch earlier this year. They weren't very interested in my running towards them waving and yelling to stop until they had ridden thru the lines busting one and tangling themselves up. They said they didn't give a crap about the signs and they were allowed to ride there and i shouldn't be laying out lines on their beach. They had drunk enough that they really didn't care who was in the right or wrong and were just plain scary. Happily of late the security guys have been patrolling more regularly but be very careful. There are still lots of 4wd trucks and jeeps that blast all over the place, they like to drive right in the edge of the water so don't leave your gear spread out. I now always drift launch because they come blasting along so fast if you are in the middle of a self launch they are liable to go right thru your stuff. You can see from all the empty bottles and cans that this is popular spot for some serious drinking and 'partying'. You are supposed to have an access permit to be on this property, you buy it from the port of Woodland. Apparently they ask to see them once in a while and ticket. If your going to come here please buy a permit and encourage the port to keep the access open.
Their are submerged trees in that butter upstream of each of the jetties, depending on the water level you will see branches sticking up. Lots of random pilings in the section from the southern most jetty down to the mouth of the lewis river. Sometimes these are exposed sometimes just below the surface.
The more northerly access spots that PKH mentioned are less wild, I think Lions Park is the most northerly and has less wierd and scary people.

Isn't this the same stretch of river that the Ultrons song was about?
