PostThu Jul 28, 11 6:40 am    Sauvie beach cleanup - Updated: Monday 5pm Reply with quote

Update: As Drew pointed out the weekend is busy at SI and even noon probably won't be early enough so I'm updating this to be Monday at 5pm. Seems like most of the regulars get there between 5 and 6 so that should work. Feel free to show up later with your rake though.

I'm going to be doing a beach cleanup Monday at 5pm at the Sauvie Island kite area. Mostly there is just a lot of twigs and crap where we pump and rig so the main focus will be trying to get people out there with rakes and a few trash bags to clean that crap up. There are a couple bigger logs in the general vicinity so if we could move those downstream a couple hundred yards that would be great too. Please come if you can and bring a rake. If the wind gods smile upon our work I'll be kiting there after.

I would be happy to provide some hamburgers and hot dogs if anyone has a small grill they could bring to cook us some tasty food.

Keep up the stoke!

Good idea....
....but, Sunday is gonna be a nice day and the beach will likely be packed with people.
In the past when we have done this it has usually been on a weeknight on an empty beach.

Thanks for spear-heading, but you may want to reconsider the timing.

That's why I picked noon. I thought it would be early enough that the beach wouldn't be crowded yet. Is that not the case at SI? Eh probably not. I'll change it to Monday night.

Kudos William.

Unfortunately I have to meet with folks from China on Monday nites, so that's my late nite at work. I might be able to make it out by 6:30 or so.

I would defnitely go and was wondering if this was going to be organized this ear. Unfortunately, I'm out of town Monday. We'll there be another one? Either way, we should do another SI night later in the month. I'd love to meet more of the SI gang.

This post is the organization for the event. I really don't expect too many people will show up. Obviously the more that do the more of the beach we can clean up in a reasonable amount of time. I guess we will see if we need to organize another after we find out how much we can do with this one. If I schedule another I'll do it at least a week in advance.

Great. If you happen to have a shovel can you bring that too? I don't know how deep the couple logs we are going to move are buried.

Got some good work done.

--Some of the random twigs have been raked up.
--That dead log sticking up at the north end of where we pump has been removed.
--All the small loose logs have been removed.
--One of the three large logs at the south end has been buried.

Thanks to those that came out. I got pictures of everyone involved. Here they are; make sure you show your appreciation next time you see them at Sauvie! A couple other interesting pics as well.

We filled over it with dirt but I didn't get a picture of that. There is still a log that needs to be buried but Steve and I didn't get done with that one log until 8pm. Maybe the next day there is wind a few guys can bring shovels and take care of the remaining log. If we can get that last log buried we will have clear beach starting just after the last set of stairs and going as far north as we need.

Youkai deserves big bonus points and respect. Not only did he organize this effort, but he really worked his ass off despite a crap turn-out on a no wind day. We gained quite a bit of usable beach on the north end, got rid of a bunch of debris and hazards, hacked down blackberries, etc.

Like Youkai said, there are still a couple of big logs that we need to either bury or muscle down to the river.

And the south end of the beach is starting to be consumed by reeds. All the cool kids will have to migrate to the north end and associate with newbs unless something is done about that...

I might have a F-One jersey in store for Youkai! I'll have to inspect the work of course over a cold Dead Guy (beer not actual dead guy). Thanks again for the work out there. I'll try to help out with the next one. Maybe we can try a raffle type thing to get more bodies out there this time. (not dead ones)
