Mon Jul 25, 11 8:46 pm good board for chop? |
|
|
I am wondering if anyone has suggestions for a board to help cope with rough water and chop. I am new to the sport [on water, at least], so please excuse my gaperness and feel free to offer up any suggestions! I have no problem staying up wind on my 130x39 Balance, but out at Jetty this weekend found myself getting bit by waves and taken down a few times. Or getting un-intentional airtime due to my need for speed with such a small plank. I really don't know what to look for in terms of characteristics, but am assuming stiffness, width, and shape have a lot to do with it. For reference, I'm 155lbs. I saw a number of people on Makos, and have heard a lot of good things about those boards. Just wanted to get some other opinions; thanks for any advice! |

See if you can demo the new 2011 North Jamie with twin hull. I ride a 2009 Jaime 132 and find it fine for the voodoo chop we get at Third Ave in San Fran Bay. Used to ride a 2008 SX 136 and found it was too stiff for my taste. Replaced both North and Slingshot pads - both of which I thought were sub-par - with Liquid Force Luxury which helped. I'm now shopping for a slightly bigger board and probably sticking with the Jaime line, though I dislike the 2011 graphics and dig the killer pads/straps on the new Axon boards (Ben Meyer's company).
I haven't ridden the newly redesigned Jaime yet but my friend loves his (coming off an older X-Ride), so I'm looking forward to comparing it with two of the Axon models. Good luck! |

+1 for the 2011 North Jaime. It is a sweet board and a big improvement over last years model. |

Xenon Laluz is an amazing board in chop...I'm not sure how it compares to the boards above - I've never ridden any of them - just know the difference in what I was riding and the Laluz & it's night & day.....terrible on the wallet though. |

the mako is a great board for chop. but is not a load and pop wakestyle jumping board but if you send the kite and dangle it is the best chop board. |

4 things make a board good for chop:
1/ A deeper Concave makes for less slapping & more cutting through the water
2/ A larger Rocker smooths out the ride up and over waves, ask any surfer
3/ A Rounder outline is better, wide squared off corners spray you in the face in chop.
4/ Rounder Rails sit deeper in the water and are less likely to "skip" out
* Note The opposite of all of this is true if you want a good freestyle board
That's my opinion but I am open to any and all points otherwise. For actual board suggestions just call me at the shop.

I would DEFINITELY look at the Underground FLX
I love my old slingshot misfit, and really love my old north jaime..... but the Underground FLX is a much much much much better board for chop. It has deep channels and a spine, lots of flex, and virtually no face spray (BIG PLUS FOR ME).
The Jaime had better pop, and the misfit likes the butter.... but for chop UG FLX for sure!

you can't beat a Brokite Freeride board for riding in the gorge, whether your getting pounded by chop or ripping in the butter smooth swell.
Like Dave says, good boards for chop have rocker, concave and a rounder tips. Brokite has perfected a shape with a great balance of all three.
While the mako is a killer board in chop as well, its foam core and soft round rails make it a challenging board for jumping and if you do get a decent jump you better land soft on the foam core!
O by the way... did i mention brokite boards are carbon fiber custom boards, handmade in the USA at the same prices as your made-in-china wood core boards! its not even fair to compare. but talk is cheap, they speak for themselves if you ride one, and if you ask nicely the texas' boys might build one for ya! _________________ Sean Sauve |

They were zero-gravity before Brokite... my old man swears by the boards, totally custom.
Its good to support the handmade products, but you can also be on a waiting list for those boards. |
